The Bowling Green State University track and field team proudly hosts the 2012 Sid Sink Open at Perry Field House beginning at 10:00 a.m. on Sat., Jan. 28.
The event is named in honor of former Falcon athlete and coach Sid Sink. Sink, a member of the BGSU Athletics Hall of Fame, is one of the most decorated athletes in Bowling Green history.
A native of Greenville, Ohio, Sink earned NCAA All-American honors ten times during his career at BGSU from 1968 to 1972. He competed on both the cross country and track and field teams, and his number of All-American honors surpasses that of any other Falcon athlete in school history.
As a cross country athlete, Sink won All-American honors in three consecutive years. He placed ninth at the national meet in 1968, then placed 12th in 1969 and eighth in 1970. Sink was the Mid-American Conference champion in 1968 and 1969, and his efforts helped Bowling Green win the MAC's team championship in 1969.
With the track and field team, Sink was named All-American an additional seven times. He was a two-time NCAA champion in both indoor and outdoor track and field. He won the steeplechase at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in 1970 and 1971, then won the 3200m and distance medley relay (DMR) at the 1972 NCAA Indoor Championships. He also placed in the top five of an NCAA championship event three other times.
Sink owns six BGSU track records, including the 3000m, 3200m and 4800m in indoor competition. For ourtdoor marks, Sink owns the school record in the steeplechase, as well as the 3200m and 4800m.
After being inducted into the BGSU Athletics Hall of Fame in 1976, Sink became the women's cross country coach in 1978. During his tenure with the team, BGSU won four consecutive MAC championships from 1980 to 1983. Eventually, he became the coach of the men's cross country team, as well as the men's track and field team. He led men's cross country for 14 years and led the team to the 1995 MAC championship -- its first since he helped the team win it as a student-athlete in 1969. During his 13 years with track and field, Sink led the team to a third-place MAC finish in 1991.
As a result of his leadership, Sink was named MAC Coach of the Year on five separate occasions.
