Weekend Wrapup: Falcons Capture Toledo Invite
October 14, 2012 | Women's Tennis

In addition to the Falcons and host Toledo, the tournament field included Detroit and Duquesne.
Falcon players combined to go 21-5 on the weekend, with a record of 13-4 in singles matches and an 8-1 mark in doubles play. Three BGSU players, seniors Jade Johnson and Maddy Eccleston and junior Emily Reuland, were undefeated.
BGSU led the way with eight of a possible nine points, and the Falcons were leading in the final competition when the last match was abandoned due to rain on Saturday. The point standings saw the Falcons followed by Detroit (5), Toledo (3) and Duquesne (1).
"I am proud of the whole team," said Falcon head coach Penny Dean. "We made a lot of improvements between our last tournament and this weekend. And, we found out some things we need to go forward and work on."
Reuland won six matches at UT, going a perfect 3-0 in singles and combining with fellow junior Nikki Chiricosta for three wins in as many doubles matches. Johnson had a 4-0 mark, winning two singles and two doubles contests, while Eccleston was 3-0 on the weekend, including a pair of doubles wins.
Johnson teamed up with senior Katie Grubb for one of her doubles wins, and with freshman Drew Fillis for the other. Eccleston combined with Grubb for a pair of doubles victories.
Chiricosta went 5-1 on the weekend, while Fillis and fellow freshman Katie Brozovich were each 3-1. Grubb's 4-2 mark included a perfect 3-0 doubles record. Senior Mary Hill split a pair of matches, and was leading in a third contest when it was abandoned due to the weather. Hill had a one-point lead in the third-set tiebreaker against UT's Silvia Carvajal when the rains came.
Team scores were not kept, but a hidden-dual format was utilized. The four schools played a round-robin format, as each team played six singles and three doubles matches against each of the other three teams over the two days.
The tournament utilized a point system, with the competition divided into doubles, A singles and B singles. The team winning at least two of the three matches in any of the competitions earned a point.
Had traditional scoring been used for the matches, the Falcons would have defeated Detroit by a 6-1 score and Duquesne by a 5-2 result, and BG would have been leading Toledo, 5-1, with the one abandoned match.
BGSU's final fall tournament will be the WMU Super Challenge, hosted by Western Michigan. That event will be held from Nov. 9-11 in Kalamazoo, Mich.
