The Bowling Green State University women's golf team carded a 36-hole score of 624 to finish second at The Preview, completing arguably the greatest fall season in the history of BGSU women's golf.
The field, which featured eight teams from the Mid-American Conference, was led by fellow conference member Ball State. The Cardinals edged out BGSU by three shots, ending with a team score of 621. Eastern Michigan (625) was third, followed by Toledo (627, 4th) and Akron (634, 5th). Other MAC schools included Western Michigan (636, 7th), Northern Illinois (648, 10th) and Ohio (652, 11th). A total of 15 teams competed in the two day event, hosted by Longaberger Golf Club in Nashport, Ohio.
If anything, the MAC Championships could be interesting in late April. These same eight MAC schools, along with Kent State, will compete on this same course on April 26-28.
BGSU entered the final round one shot behind Akron and tied with Ball State as the three teams went toe-to-toe for 18 holes. On Tuesday the Falcons carded a 309 to surpass Akron's 320, but Ball State fired the lowest round of the tournament (tied with Toledo), finishing with a 306 on day two. BGSU's 309 was the fourth-lowest round of the fall season for the Orange and Brown.
The second-place finish snaps BGSU's win streak at two straight tournaments. The Falcons entered this week's action with back-to-back wins at the Cleveland State Invitational and Butler Fall Invite.
Bailey Arnold finished two shots off medalist honors, firing a 77-75--152, to finish tied for third among the 82-player field. In five tournaments this fall, Arnold has finished in the top-six in four of them.
Freshman Lily Bartell finished tied for 13th with a score of 157 (78-79). It is her second-best tournament score of her young career.
Shelby Wilson wins most improved for the day. After opening with a disappointing 84, she carded a 76 in round two. The sophomore ended the tournament tied for 25th with a score of 160.
Patricia Holt, the reigning BGSU Pizza Hut Female Student-Athlete of the Week, matched Wilson's total. The sophomore finished the tournament with a 160 (78-82).
Rounding out the Falcons' lineup was senior Amy Ruthenberg, who tied for 32nd with a score of 161 (82-79).
Freshman Hannah Lewis scored 166 (83-83), competing as an individual.
BGSU ended the fall season with a team scoring average of 310.3. The current school record for lowest team scoring average is 318.57, established last season.
