A Swimmer's Insight: Carmen Young
October 21, 2012 | Women's Swimming & Diving
My name is Carmen Young and I am a sophomore on the women's swim team. I swim the breaststroke and IM events and I'm majoring in dietetics at BGSU. I was really excited for the beginning of our season because we had a solid freshman class coming in and all of our returners were pumped to come back and train hard. Our team has gotten off to a great start this year! First, we hosted the Jean Campbell Alumni Meet during homecoming weekend with some of the BGSU swimming alumni, both men and women, came back to compete in some fun races. Then we had our Orange vs. Brown intrasquad meet over fall break. This was the first time the coaches really got to see us in a competitive mode and there were some great races!
Most recently, we hosted the Tom Stubbs Relays against Toledo, Akron and Youngstown State. We fought really hard and had some phenomenal races. Last year we only won two out of the ten relays and this year we won eight of ten and set three meet records! We really surprised ourselves with how well we swam and stayed focused the entire meet while still having fun with it. Now we are preparing for our first regular season meet on Friday against Wayne State and Ashland. They'll provide us with some great competition and will test our abilities and strengths as a team.
One thing we have done differently this year is create a "walk out" for the team before every home meet. We all walk out, by class, holding hands and have our names announced to the crowd - it really helps connect us as a team right before we race. We have also really stepped up our game in workouts and in the weight room. Our sets have gotten more challenging and we are gradually lifting heavier weights. In the pool we have started doing a lot of resistance work using power racks, drag vests and weighted bottle bags. All of this hard work has also helped us to become closer as a team in and out of the pool, which is really important because we are a bigger team this year. We have become a much stronger team with a positive and winning mindset! As we gear up for our first in-season meet, we hope to see you all there cheering on the Falcons!
GO FALCONS!
