Falcons Ready For Battle At MAC Championships

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio. -- The Bowling Green State University men's and women's cross country teams head back to Buffalo, N.Y. for the MAC Championships this weekend. The women will get first crack with a six-kilometer run at Beaver Island State Park, running at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 27. The men will follow shortly after, running an 8K course at 12 p.m.
Familiar Territory
The Falcons are familiar with the course, after competing at the Buffalo Stampede Invitational earlier this season (Aug. 15). The women earned a second place finish, while the men placed fifth.
Redshirt junior Abby Koch paced the women with a time of 18:03.09 in the 5K race, giving her a third place overall finish. Senior Josh Franek recorded the lowest time for the men, placing 21st overall with a time of 26:00.7 in the 8K run.
The women placed second out of five teams, collecting a team score of 59, and a cumulative time of 1:32:12.15. The Falcons edged out MAC for Buffalo, who took third with a collective score of 68, and a time of 1:32:45.7. Akron took the top spot with a team score of 20, and a time of 1:30:15.2. Robert Morris and Niagara finished in fourth and fifth place, respectively.
The men took the fifth spot in their 8K run, earning a team score of 119, and a cumulative time of 2:12:26.1. Host Buffalo took first, followed by Akron, Colgate and Robert Morris, with Niagara finishing in last place.
Franek's time of 26:00.7 set a new personal best for the Hiram, Ohio native, edging out his 8K time (26:05) at the MAC Championships last season. The Stampede marked Franek's first race of the season after sitting out the Mel Brodt Collegiate opener. Freshman Tim Jurick finished his first collegiate 8K in 26:01, placing 18th. Freshman Brian Coleman (26:22.5) finished in 23rd place, while junior Joe van Bolderen set a new career best with a time of 26:34.8, placing 26th. Junior Perry Fraylick rounded out the Falcons' top five, with a time 27:27.8, also a career best.
2011 MAC Championships
Toledo claimed its fourth Women's Championship title in school history in record fashion as MAC teams fought it out at the 2011 MAC Cross Championships at Pine View Golf Club in Muncie, Ind. at Muncie Elks Country Club. The Rockets scored a conference record-low 33 points and won back-to-back conference titles for the second time in school history. Eastern Michigan claimed its 16th Men's Championship title in school history.
Central Michigan's Tecumseh Adams claimed the men's individual title in a time of 24:01.6, while Ohio's Juli Accurso claimed the women's individual title in a time of 20.35.3.
The 2011 Falcons At MAC
The men's team placed ninth in the championship 8,000-kilometer (8K) race. Jason Salyer led the team with a 26th-place finish and a time of 25:12.4. Freshman Kevin Budge placed 57th (53rd among scorers) and completed the distance in 25:51.3. The women's team ended the season with a 12th-place finish. Alixe Korsnack was the Falcons' top runner as she concluded the 6,000-kilometer (6K) run in 24:26.3.
