FALCONS PICKED TO FINISH SECOND IN EAST DIVISION
Roos welcomes back nine letterwinners from a year ago, and also has added seven newcomers -- four to the roster and three to the coaching staff.
BGSU has four starters back from last season, including seniors Danielle Havel and Chrissy Steffen, redshirt junior Alexis Rogers and sophomore Jasmine Matthews. Havel, Rogers and Steffen each started all 31 games last winter, while Matthews made 21 starts. On Wednesday (Oct. 31), Rogers and Steffen were chosen to the Preseason All-MAC Team, and the Falcons were picked to finish second in the East Division in the preseason conference poll.
Havel and Steffen, who both hail from Carmel, Ind., are one-half of a senior class that also includes Simone Eli and Allison Papenfuss. The junior class is comprised of Jillian Halfhill, Jill Stein and Katrina Salinas, in addition to Rogers. Halfhill made 10 starts a year ago, while Stein is a tri-captain of the '12-13 team along with Havel and Steffen.
Salinas is one of the Falcons' newcomers, having played the last two seasons at Central Arizona College. One other BGSU newcomer is a transfer, as sophomore Erica Donovan joins the Falcons after transferring from North Carolina State University. Donovan will sit out the 2012-13 season per NCAA transfer rules.
The sophomore class includes Matthews, Donovan and Deborah Hoekstra, and freshmen Bailey Cairnduff and Miriam Justinger round out the BGSU roster.
Saturday's exhibition is scheduled to be aired on WBGU-FM 88.1, the flagship station for Falcon women's basketball. The audio broadcast also will be available, free of charge, on BGSUFalcons.com. And, as is the case for all home Falcon basketball action, live stats will be available at BGSUFalcons.com as well.
Slippery Rock returns seven letterwinners from last year's club that went 6-20 overall and 3-19 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference games. The team was picked to finish eighth in the PSAC's West Division in the '12-13 league preseason poll.
Head coach Tanya Longo's returning players include D'Asia Chambers, who averaged 9.8 points and 4.8 rebounds a year ago, along with Erinne Cunningham. Cunningham, the lone returning starter from last season, averaged 8.7 ppg and handed out 73 assists. Joining the returnees is a group of 10 newcomers, including five true freshmen and five transfer students.
For BGSU, the regular season begins with a home game against Madonna on Saturday, Nov. 10. The Falcons went 24-7 overall last season, winning the MAC's overall regular-season title with a 14-2 league ledger.
