Brown Swims Past Orange in Preseason Meet

Bennet, Scheps Each Win Four Races
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University swim team completed its first intrasquad test Friday, Oct. 5 at Cooper Pool with the annual Orange versus Brown meet.
The Brown team edged out the Orange in a narrow victory, 110-109. Members of the winning team were Stephanie Boyle, Erica Nieminen, Alexandra Poitinger, Joëlle Scheps, Jen Beatty, Hannah Newman, Haley Roberts, Alexis Kain, Audrey McDonald, Jordan Bullock, Brittany Szekely and Anise Foreman.
Swimmers competed in 12 races, with the Brown team sealing its victory with a win in the final race - the 400 freestyle relay. The team of Scheps, Poitinger, Nieminen and Boyle held on to win the meet for the Brown.
"Just looking at times, we're already much faster than we were last year at this point," said head coach Petra Martin. "And it's not just the top people - you can also see more depth, which is pretty exciting. There were a lot of really exciting races and it was close, too."
Individually, Emily Bennet and Joëlle Scheps won four events each, leading their respective teams. Bennet, a senior, took first in the 100 back, 50 free, 100 free and 100 butterfly. Scheps, a junior transfer from the Netherlands, made a strong first impression, winning the 200 free, 200 back, 200 IM and 400 free relay for the Brown team.
Several freshmen showed promise, including Jordan Bullock, who won the 200 fly and placed second in the 100 fly. Kayla Effinger put up top-4 finishes in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle and Daniela Carrillo did well in the breaststroke.
"This is important because it's a training meet for us to see in a meet setting what needs to be done better," Martin said. "You can see that they've been translating some of the things from workouts into racing now, which is exciting to see."
The Falcons have one more exhibition meet on the schedule - the Tom Stubbs Relays on Friday, Oct. 12 at Cooper Pool. The team then opens the regular season at home on Oct. 26 against Wayne State and Ashland.
