Senior leads the way as six Falcons post Saturday singles wins

The Bowling Green State University tennis team enjoyed a solid second-day showing in Kalamazoo, as the Western Michigan University Super Challenge continued on Saturday (Nov. 10). The three-day tournament is being hosted by WMU at the West Hills Athletic Club.

Senior co-captain Mary Hill picked up a singles win for the second-straight day, advancing to the championship match of her flight. Hill, competing at the sixth flight, defeated Notre Dame's JoHanna Manningham on Saturday, and will face Penn State's Sarah Henderson in the flight championship match on Sunday.

No fewer than five of Hill's teammates posted singles wins on Saturday, with all five advancing to the consolation final of their respective flights. Junior Nikki Chiricosta cruised to a first-set win over her Marquette foe, then won the second set in a tiebreaker at the top flight.

Another junior, Emily Reuland, advanced to the back-draw final at the third flight. Reuland led her Penn State foe in the opening set, when her opponent was forced to retire. At the fourth flight, senior co-captain Maddy Eccleston, after losing in a third-set super-tiebreaker on Friday, won in a third-set 'breaker against an Iowa State opponent on Saturday.

In the seventh and eighth flights, BGSU players barely broke a sweat. Senior Katie Grubb did not lose a single game in her win over a PSU player at the seventh flight, while freshman Drew Fillis also beat a Nittany Lion opponent, losing just one total game in the two sets.

In doubles action, Fillis teamed up with senior Jade Johnson for a pair of wins and a back-draw championship at the third flight. The BG duo won both matches by identical 8-5 scores, beating a team from host WMU as well as a tandem from Iowa State.

Hill and freshman Katie Brozovich also picked up a win in the back draw on Saturday. After losing a narrow 8-6 match to a WMU duo, the Falcon team rolled to an 8-1 win over a PSU team.

The WMU Super Challenge, the Falcons' final action of the fall, concludes on Sunday (Nov. 11).
