Baseball: Previewing The 2012 Pitchers
February 11, 2012 | Baseball
In 2012, Bowling Green State University will rely on a young pitching staff to lead them back to their fifth-straight Mid-American Conference Tournament. The staff features seven returning lettermen from a year ago, but also includes six newcomers. Only five of the thirteen pitchers are upperclassmen, with just two seniors. The staff will rely heavily on 2011 Friday starter Cody Apthorpe, as Apthorpe is expected to fill the role of opening day starter and Friday starter once again.
With just seven pitchers returning from last year's roster, the Falcons will be doing some shuffling in 2012. Last year's Saturday starter, Nick Bruns, moves to the bullpen as the closer in 2012, so the Falcons will be breaking in two new weekend starters this season.
Captains Cody Apthorpe and Nick Bruns will lead the staff in 2012, with the help of fellow veterans Matt Malewitz and Patrick Martin. Both Malewitz and Martin are fifth-year seniors and left-handed pitchers.
A year ago, Matt Malewitz was the primary weekday starter, but he is expected to challenge for a weekend rotation spot this season. In 2011 he had a record of 2-3, with his signature win coming in a 5-4 decision at Ohio State. Fellow fifth-year guy Patrick Martin, who also played outfield in 2011, will strictly pitch in 2012. Apthorpe is expected to fill the Friday starter role again, while junior classmate Nick Bruns will be the primary closer.
Sophomores Ethan McKenny and Ben Singer will compete for a starting job in 2012, while Chris Miller is expected to come out of the bullpen. McKenny started two games a season ago, while Singer appeared in 17 contests on the mound. Miller made five appearances in 2011, all in relief.
Andrew Lacinak, Trevor Blaylock, Jake Overbeck, Jason Link, Alex Nossaman, and Jack Masin are the six newcomers to the pitching staff this season. Lacinak, a graduate of Reading High School, joins high school teammate Jake Overbeck as a Falcon. Trevor Blaylock comes to BGSU from Bryan High School, where he played with current Falcons Levi Fisher, Alex Nossaman, and T.J. Losby. Jason Link, a 6-foot-1 freshman, hails from Cincinnati, Ohio. Alex Nossaman and Jack Masin were fall walk-ons, and both lefties are expected to compete for time on the mound in 2012.
