AKRON, Ohio -- The Bowling Green State University track and field team earned nine different top-ten marks at the Akron Invitational on Saturday (Feb. 11), as the team completed its final tune-up before the 2012 Mid-American Conference Indoor Championships. The championship meet will be held from Feb. 24-25 in Akron, Ohio.
"We continued to build momentum heading into the conference championships in two weeks," said BGSU head coach Lou Snelling. "Individual highlights came from Jeannette, Allison, and Ashley. With continuing to red shirt a large group of athletes this year, several competed unattached today. Freshman Maria Meredith was a bright spot in winning her heat of the mile in a PR of 5:12.30."
Jeanette Pettigrew finished second overall in the Gold Division 60 meter dash. Pettigrew's qualifying time was 7.59 seconds, and she was even faster in the final, when she posted a mark of 7.50 seconds. She finished just three one-hundredths of a second behind Tennessee's Kia Jackson.
Also in the Gold Division, Allorian Horne earned fifth place after completing the 200-meter dash in 25.31 seconds. Ashley Harris had a 46-09.00 (14.25m) toss in the shot put to earn eighth place, while Taylor Stichter ran in the 5,000-meter race and finished in 19:34.37.
BGSU entered a team in the 4x400 Gold Division relay, and that group placed seventh overall. Felicia Jefferson, Lisa Worthey, Allison Weimer and Natalie Sommerville combined to run the distance in 3:59.21.
The Falcons' best finish in Blue Division events was posted by Ashley Harris in the weight throw. Harris earned third place with a 56-foot (17.07m) throw.
Janelle Campbell posted a pair of fourth-place finishes in the jumping events. In the long jump, Campbell had a leap of 17-08.25 (5.39m), while she posted a 35-06.00 (10.82m) mark in the triple jump.
Allison Weimer and Emily Gerken also earned top-ten places in Blue Division competition. Weimer placed fourth in the 400-meter dash after a run of 58.10 seconds. Gerken competed in the high jump and finished sixth after a jump of 5-02.25 (1.58m).
Several members of the BGSU team ran as unattached athletes. Among this group was Maria Meredith, who finished third in the Blue Division mile run (5:12.30) and Andrea Alt, who won the Blue Division 3,000-meter run (10:38.05).
Bowling Green now has two weeks to prepare for the MAC Championships. They will return to Stile Field House at the University of Akron for the championship meet on Feb. 24.
