Baseball: Previewing The 2012 Infielders
February 12, 2012 | Baseball
The infield, like most every position at Bowling Green State University, will be fairly inexperienced when the first pitch is thrown next weekend. With Matt Pitzulo being the only returning starter from last season, three spots will be open for the taking.
At first base, junior Drew Kuns, sophomore Jeremy Shay, and redshirt freshman Clay Rolf are competing for the starting job. Kuns, coming off an injury in 2011, will move back to the infield after seeing time in the outfield a season ago. Jeremy Shay will look to continue building on his strong freshman season in 2011. Shay will most likely split time between the infield and catching. Clay Rolf, Bowling Green State University's only male two-sport athlete, will compete for time at first after joining the team in the middle of January.
At second base, returning starter Matt Pitzulo is expected to see the majority of innings. However, freshman Brian Bien and Logan Walker are pushing to earn time at multiple infield positions.
At shortstop, sophomore Brandon Howard is competing along with freshman Brian Bien for the starting job come next Saturday. Howard had a great freshman season before breaking his foot a few weeks in and sitting out the rest of the season. Bien, a native of Roger Bacon High School (Cincinnati, Ohio), was a versatile three-sport athlete in high school.
Over at third base Logan Walker and Tyler Wynn are competing for the starting job. Wynn, who is a fifth-year senior, transferred from Cleveland State University following the discontinuation of their program following the 2011 season. Walker saw considerable time on the infield a season ago, and is expected to compete for playing time at multiple positions in 2012. Freshman Alex Gabler is also expected to compete for time at third base.
Head coach Danny Schmitz will rely heavily on junior captain Matt Pitzulo to lead the infield this season. Although the infield comes in as one of the oldest core positional groups, they will still need to gel as a group in the early part of 2012.
