Baseball: Previewing the 2012 Hitters
February 13, 2012 | Baseball
Coming off a season in which the Falcons finished 20-31, they will try to replace arguably four-of-the-five best bats from the 2011 lineup. Jon Berti, who was drafted in the 18th round by the Toronto Blue Jays, as well as former Falcons Clay Duncan and Ryan Schlater, are all gone from a team that hit just .275. The Falcons will also have to replace Frank Berry, who hit .277 from the hot corner a season ago. But, like most every year, the Falcons expect to reload at the plate.
Matt Pitzulo headlines the returning hitters, having hit .290 last season, and .352 during his freshman campaign. Sophomore outfielder Andrew Kubuski boasts the second highest returning batting average from 2011, having hit .267 last season. The Falcons will return seven of the top 11 batting averages from 2011, which doesn't include Patrick Martin's average. Martin had the ninth highest average in 2011, but is expected to see the majority of his time on the mound in 2012.
The Falcons also have big bats coming back from injuries in 2011. Brandon Howard hit .417 in his first 14 games as a Falcon, before his season was cut short by a broken foot. Drew Kuns will also return in 2012, after sitting out most of 2011 with an injury. Third baseman Tyler Wynn transfers from Cleveland State, where he started at third base for the Vikings last season.
Make sure to check back to BGSUFalcons.com tomorrow for the last preview of the 2012 season. We will preview the outfielders with assistant coach Justin Walker.
