Falcon Baseball Heads To Music City To Open Season

The Bowling Green State University baseball team will head to Nashville, Tenn. this weekend to open up the 2012 campaign. The Falcons of head coach Danny Schmitz will play the Kansas Jayhawks and Saint Louis Billikens in Saturday action.
The Starting Lineup
1. The Falcons are coming off a 2011 season in which they finished 20-31, and received the eighth-seed in the Mid-American Conference Tournament.
2. Head coach Danny Schmitz enters 2012 just 32 wins away from 600 career wins. His current career record is 568-517-5.
3. The Falcons had two players drafted in 2011 in Jon Berti (18th round; Toronto Blue Jays) and Ross Gerdeman (35th round; Arizona Diamondbacks). This marked the first time since 2005 that two players had been drafted in the same season. In that 2005 draft, Nolan Reimold (2nd round; Baltimore Orioles) and Burke Badenhop (19th round; Detroit Tigers) were the two Falcons drafted.
4. The Falcons come into 2012 with 22 underclassmen on the roster.
5.The Falcons will play three opponents for the first time in 2012, and two of them will come during the opening weekend. The Falcons will play Kansas, Saint Louis, and Shawnee State for the first time this season.
6. The Falcons will look to beat a Big Twelve team for the first time in school history on Saturday when they take on the Kansas Jayhawks. All-time, Bowling Green is 0-5 vs. Big Twelve competition (Missouri 0-3; Oklahoma State 0-1; Texas A&M 0-1).
7. The Falcons are 67-35-1 versus Atlantic Ten competition all-time, but have never played the Billikens of Saint Louis.
8. The 2012 Mid-American Conference Tournament is moving to All Pro Freight Sta¬dium. The tournament had been held in Chillicothe, Ohio for the past several seasons. The tournament, held in Avon, Ohio, will be from May 23-26.
9. The Falcons return just one weekend starter from 2011 to the same role, in junior Cody Apthorpe. Last year's Saturday starter, Nick Bruns, will move the bullpen to be the primary closer in 2012, while Sunday starter Charles Wooten, graduated.

The pitching matchup is expected to pit junior right-handed pitcher Cody Apthorpe for the Falcons versus freshman left-handed pitcher Wes Benjamin for the Jayhawks. Last season Kansas finished with a final record of 26-30, with a Big 12 record of 9-18. Kansas coach Ritch Price enters his tenth season with the Jayhawks, looking for his 300th win at Kansas this weekend. The Jayhawks will play Middle Tennessee State, however, on Friday afternoon to open their season.

The Billikens will play at Lipscomb on Friday, and at Middle Tennessee State Saturday before squaring off with the Falcons Saturday afternoon.
