BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The Bowling Green State University softball team swept the second day of the Hilltopper Classic, defeating Morehead State and Murray State in back-to-back games on Sunday.
The Falcons opened the day with a win over Morehead State, defeating the Eagles 6-3.
Sophomore Katie Yoho led the charge offensively for Bowling Green, driving in five runs in the contest. Yoho was 3-for-4 on the day, including a career best two home runs. Freshman pitcher Jamie Kertes allowed just one earned run, and struck out two in six innings for her first career win.
Bowling Green came out swinging in the top of the first, securing two runs on three hits. With two outs, juniors Paige Berger and Andrea Arney singled to get on base, before Yoho drove them in with a double to right field, earning two of her five RBI in the game.
Morehead responded with a run in the bottom of the second frame, taking advantage of two Falcon errors to pull the game within one.
However, the Falcons kept their foot on the gas, adding two more runs in the top of the third. After a Berger double with one out, Yoho belted her first home run of the game, pushing the score to 4-1 in favor of Bowling Green.
The Eagles added another run in the bottom of the fourth inning, before the Falcons broke the game open in the top of the fifth. Solo home runs from Berger and Yoho secured two more runs for Bowling Green, putting the score at 6-2.
Morehead would add one more run in the seventh inning, but it wasn't enough, as Bowling Green came away with the 6-3 victory.
“We did a good job of attacking early and often,” said head coach Shannon Salsburg. “Jamie (Kertes) and Erin (Greenwalt) did a nice job of attacking their hitters.”
The Falcons continued to roll in the second game of the day, defeating the Murray State Racers 6-4.
Unlike the Falcons first game of the day, Bowling Green fell behind early. The Racers opened the game by scoring three runs in the first three innings of play, putting the Falcons in an early hole.
Bowling Green's bats came to life in the fourth inning, as sophomore Erika Stratton knocked home a two run double with two outs and the bases loaded to pull the score to 3-2.
After the Racers added a run in the bottom of the frame, Bowling Green picked up the hitting, and knocked home three runs on three hits in the top of the fifth.
Junior Hannah Hulk started the inning with a walk, before Berger singled through the left side. With two runners on, Arney doubled to right field, earning two RBI, and tying the game 4-4. Arney would eventually move to third on a passed ball, before being brought home on a single from Yoho, giving the Falcons the 5-4 lead.
The Falcons would add an insurance run in the top of the sixth, after some aggressive base running from senior Melissa West. After hitting a single to get on base, West advanced to second on a passed ball, before eventually moving to third on a groundout from Fulk in the following at bat. Senior Rachel Proehl brought West home with an RBI single, securing the 6-4 win for Bowling Green.
The Falcons used three pitchers in the contest, with sophomore Erin Greenwalt earning the win, her first of the season. Kertes came in and pitched the final 2.2 innings, earning her first career save.
“I am so proud of our team today,” said head coach Shannon Salsburg. “Murray state is an outstanding team. We battled and played our ball the entire game. This was a great team win. “
Bowling Green is now 4-3 overall this season, and will travel to Clearwater, Fla. next weekend for the Under Armour Invitational.
