Previewing The 2012 Baseball Team
February 09, 2012 | Baseball
With just nine days to go until the Falcon baseball team opens the season in Nashville, head coach Danny Schmitz sat down with BGSUFalcons.com to discuss the upcoming season, and some of the expectations that come along with a new season.
The Falcons, coming off of a 20-31 season in 2011, will look to qualify for their fifth straight Mid-American Conference Tournament in 2012. Last season, the Falcons earned the eighth-seed for the tournament, but were eliminated after just two games in Chillicothe. The 2012 version of the MAC Tournament will be held in Avon, Ohio at All Pro Freight Stadium.
The Falcons will boast a young team in 2012, featuring just 11 upperclassmen (four seniors and seven juniors). 22 student-athletes enter 2012 with at least three years of eligibilty left. The Falcons return just three position starters from a season ago (Andrew Kubuski, Alex Davison, and Matt Pitzulo), while returning just one weekend starter to the same role (Cody Apthorpe). Last season's Saturday starter, Nick Bruns, makes the switch to the bullpen to fill the role of closer in 2012.
This year's freshman class was once again highly touted as one of the top classes in the Midwest by Baseball America, and many of the freshman will step in and compete for playing time right away.
Head Coach Danny Schmitz will enter 2012, his 22nd season at the helm of the orange and brown, needing just 32 wins to reach 600 for his career. Coach Schmitz is joined by pitching coach Rick Blanc (fifth season), hitting coach Spencer Schmitz (fifth season), and volunteer assistant Justin Walker (first season).
The Falcons will open the season on February 18 in Nashville Tenn. when they take on the Kansas Jayhawks at 11:30 ET/10:30 CT (local time). They will then travel to Murfreesboro, Tenn. later that evening where they will face off with the Billikens of Saint Louis University.
The Falcons home-opener will be on Tuesday, March 13, at 3 pm, when the Falcons face the Dayton Flyers at Warren E. Steller Field.
Tomorrow (Friday, Feb. 10) BGSUFalcons.com will start a day-by-day breakdown of positions, beginning with the catchers. Make sure to follow @WEAREBGBaseball on Twitter, and stay tuned to BGSUFalcons.com all season long for your Falcon baseball fix.
