Falcons To Play At Oakland In CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament
March 11, 2012 | Men's Basketball
Bowling Green, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University men's basketball team is back in the postseason for the first time in three years as the Falcons will play at Oakland Wednesday at 7 pm in the first round of the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament (CIT).
“We are very thankful and excited for the opportunity to play in the CIT Postseason Tournament,” Head Coach Louis Orr said. “We are opening up against a quality team in Oakland that has experience playing in the postseason. I have a great deal of respect for Coach Greg Kampe and his program.”
The CIT is a 32-team postseason single-elimination tournament. The Falcons enter the tournament with a record of 16-15 overall, while Oakland is 17-15.
Bowling Green tied for fifth in the Mid-American Conference this year, earning the No. 6 seed for the MAC Tournament. Oakland ended third in the final Summit League standings and played two MAC schools during the regular season, losing at home to both Ohio and Western Michigan.
The Falcons last made the postseason in 2009, earning a bid to the National Invitation Tournament after winning the MAC regular season crown. Bowling Green lost at Creighton 73-71 in the first round. The Falcons have not won a postseason game since defeating Tennessee 67-58 in the short-lived National Commissioner's Invitational in 1975.
“For seniors Dee Brown and Scott Thomas, this will be their second postseason appearance in four years,” Orr said. “For both our seniors and our underclassmen, the CIT is an opportunity to continue our season and compete for a postseason championship. Our underclassmen will be able to grow and gain valuable experience.”
Oakland is led by the nation's leading scorer Reggie Hamilton. The 5-foot-11 senior guard is averaging 25.7 points per game and is sixth in the country with 3.3 three-pointers per game. Amazingly, he is only second on the team in three-pointers made as 6-5 sophomore guard Travis Bader is third in the country with 3.6 three-pointers per game. As a team, the Grizzlies average 9.2 three-pointers per contest, third-best in the nation and are ninth in scoring average at 79.2 points per contest. Ironically, BGSU has not allowed an opponent to score 30 points in a game since Oakland's Johnathon Jones scored 31 on Dec. 1, 2007, which was BGSU head coach Louis Orr's first year at the helm.
In another twist, Oakland head coach Greg Kampe is a 1978 Bowling Green State University graduate who is in his 28th year as head coach of the Grizzlies. He is the only athlete in MAC history to earn first team All-Academic honors in both football and basketball.
All first round games in the CIT are scheduled to take place March 13-15 and second round games will follow March 16-18. The quarterfinals will take place March 20-21 and the semifinals will be played March 23-24. The championship game will be played March 28 and will be broadcast live on Fox College Sports.
Bowling Green is one of four MAC teams in the tournament. Toledo, Kent State, and Buffalo have also accepted bids to the event. A year ago, three MAC teams played in the CIT as well with Buffalo and Ohio advancing to the quarterfinals and Western Michigan advancing to the second round.
