Cornell BOXSCORE | Albany BOXSCORE
FAIRFAX, Va. -- The Bowling Green State University softball team split the second day of the Cherry Blossom Classic, defeating Cornell 7-0, before losing to Albany 2-0.
Freshman pitcher Jamie Kertes pitched a two-hitter in the Falcons' 7-0 win over Cornell, recording three strikeouts and zero walks in seven innings of work. Junior Andrea Arney paced the Falcons with three hits in four at bats, also driving in three runs. Junior Hannah Fulk and sophomore Katie Yoho each recorded two hits in the contest.
The Falcons did most of their damage in the second inning, recording five runs on four hits in the frame. Freshmen Shelby Fink and Chloe Giordano each singled to open the inning, before Fulk drew a walk to load the bases. Senior Melissa West grounded out to third, bringing in the Falcons' first run. After junior Paige Berger earned a walk, Arney drove in two more runs on a single to right field. Yoho closed out the inning with a double, bringing in the final two runs of the inning for a 5-0 Falcon lead.
Bowling Green added two more runs in the remainder of the contest, securing the 7-0 win.
“We played solid today,” said head coach Shannon Salsburg. “It was great to see us come out so strong against Cornell. Jamie (Kertes) did an outstanding job of keeping their hitters off balance. Our hitters came out aggressive and really put the game away early.”
The Falcons dropped the second game of the afternoon, falling to Albany 2-0. West and Yoho recorded the Falcons' only hits in the contest, while freshman pitcher Paris Imholz surrendered only four hits and two earned runs in five innings of work.
“Today Albany's pitcher did a nice job of mixing against us. We played solid defense and pitched well, we simply couldn't push a run across when we had opportunities.”
Bowling Green (12-8) is back in action tomorrow in the final day of the Cherry Blossom Classic. The Falcons take on Albany for an encore game at 9 a.m., before taking on host school George Mason for a second time (11:15 a.m.) in the tournament.
