Falcons Sweep Final Day of Cherry Blossom Classic

FAIRFAX, Va. -- The Bowling Green State University softball team shut out the competition Sunday, defeating Albany 1-0, before dropping George Mason 1-0 on the final day of the Cherry Blossom Classic.
Freshman Jamie Kertes stole the show for Bowling Green in the first contest, holding Albany off the board for a 1-0 victory. Kertes only allowed four hits, and recorded four strikeouts in seven innings of work for the win. Freshman Shelby Fink recorded one of the Falcons' four hits in the game, while also driving in Bowling Green's only run.
The Falcons' lone run was scored in the bottom of the second inning on two hits, starting with a single from sophomore Katie Yoho in the first at-bat of the frame. Yoho stole second, before Fink doubled to right field, bringing home the only run Kertes would need for the victory.
Bowling Green repeated the feat in the second game of the day, defeating host school George Mason 1-0 for the third day sweep. This time however, it was freshman pitcher Paris Imholz who dominated in the BG win. Imholz recorded five strikeouts and allowed just one hit in eight innings of work, earning her team-leading seventh win of the season. Junior Andrea Arney went 2-for-4 on the day, bringing in the Falcons' only run of the contest.
The Falcons needed an extra inning to score the only run of the game for either team, as Bowling Green scored a run in the bottom of the eighth inning on two hits. Arney came to the plate with the bases loaded, and singled to second base, securing the 1-0 win for the Falcons.
“Today we pitched well and played solid defense,” said head coach Shannon Salsburg. “Jamie and Paris did an outstanding job of setting the tone on the mound. I am proud of the fight the team showed in both games. Overall we had a solid weekend as a team.”
Bowling Green (14-8) is back in action with a double header against IPFW (March 21) on the road.
