COMPLETE RESULTS (.pdf)
The Bowling Green State University women's track and field team began the outdoor season on Saturday (March 17) with several strong efforts that ultimately led to a second-place finish for the team at the 2012 UC Early Bird Relays. The event was hosted by the University of Cincinnati in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Falcon sprinters accounted for a sizable portion of the team's 77 points. Allorian Horne and Felicia Jefferson each earned top-five finishes in both the 100- and 200-meter dash. Horne won the 200-meter event with a sizzling time of 24.99 seconds and took second place in the 100 meters in just 12.44 seconds. Jefferson finished fourth (25.69) and fifth (12.55) in the two events.
The pair combined to win the top team point value (ten) in the 200-meter race and the third-best point value (six) in the 100-meter race.
Scoring in this meet was somewhat different. Rather than be based on individual times/marks, scores were based on combined times/marks for pairs of teammates. For instance, to earn first-place points, Horne and Jefferson's combined time in the 200-meter dash was 50.68 seconds, which beat the next-best combined time of 51.26 (Wright State).
Horne and Jefferson later combined to score 12 more points in a pair of traditional relays. The duo joined Janelle Campbell and Allison Weimer to finish third (48.34 seconds) in the 4x100 relay, then duplicated the third-place finish with Weimer and Lisa Worthey in the 4x400 relay (3:57.60).
Natalie Sommerville, Saisha Gailliard, Kristin Miller and Alicia Jefferson placed fifth in the 4x400 relay (4:06.30) to earn four other points for the Falcons.
Weimer and Worthey combined to score six points for BGSU in the 400-meter dash. Weimer placed third overall in the race, and her time (57.37) was less than one second behind the eventual winner.
Miller, Gailliard and Veronica Bruns also scored points for Bowling Green after competing in the 800 meters (Miller, Gailliard) and 1500 meters (Gailliard, Bruns).
Bowling Green also found success in field events. Janelle Campbell joined Allorian Horne as an event winner when she posted the top mark in the triple jump (10.77 meters). Campbell also placed 16th (3.51 meters) in the long jump.
Emily Gerken and Megan Reiter tied for sixth place in the high jump by each achieving 1.48 meter jumps.
Meanwhile, Ashley Harris earned top-ten spots in each of her three throwing events. She posted her best finish (second place) in the shot put with a 13.60-meter throw, then finished fifth in the hammer throw. Harris completed her day by notching seventh-place in the discus on the back of a 40.56-meter toss.
Anna Pomento helped Bowling Green earn points by posting throws of 38.95 meters in the discus (ninth place) and 11.19 meters in the shot put (12th place). Katie Fazekas did the same for BGSU in the hammer throw with an 11th-place mark of 42.48 meters.
The BGSU track and field team returns to action in two weeks when the travel to Toledo, Ohio for the 2012 Toledo Collegiate Challenge on Saturday, March 31.
