ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The Bowling Green State University softball team lost to Michigan Wednesday afternoon, falling to the Wolverines 12-2. Freshman Jamie Kertes started the contest, going 1.2 innings, and giving up eight runs on nine hits. Kertes went 1-for-2 at the plate, and drove in one of the Falcons' two runs in the contest. Sophomore Katie Yoho and junior Paige Berger collected the other two Falcon hits.
Michigan got on the board first, driving in a run on two hits in the bottom of the first inning.
The Falcons responded by scoring a run on two hits in the top of the second, tying the game 1-1. Freshman Shelby Fink reached first on a Michigan fielding error, before being taken out in favor of freshman Emily McClelland as a pinch runner. McClelland moved to second on a wild pitch, before advancing to third on a fielder's choice. Kertes came to the plate and doubled to center field, bringing home McClelland to tie the contest. The Wolverines intentionally walked junior Hannah Fulk, before senior Melissa West grounded out, ending the inning with the bases loaded.
Michigan exploded offensively in the bottom of the second, scoring five runs on six hits in the frame.
Bowling Green clawed back in the top of the third, putting another run on the board to cut the Michigan lead to 6-2. Berger opened the frame with a double to left field, before being moved to second on a Yoho single. After Yoho was caught off the bag, Berger made her way to home plate with aggressive base running, scoring the Falcons' second run of the afternoon.
The Wolverines responded with a solo home run in the fifth inning, before breaking the game open in the bottom of the sixth. Michigan recorded five runs on three hits in the frame, including a grand slam that ended the contest for the Falcons.
“I was really pleased with our effort,” said head coach Shannon Salsburg. “The team battled and I was pleased with that. Offensively we had some shots, which was exciting because (Michigan) is a top-25 team. I don't think the score necessarily tells you what the game looked like. I thought our defense was solid, and I thought our outfield got to a couple of balls so quick that they couldn't score. I also thought our pitchers had some nice innings.”
The 12-2 loss marks the most runs given up by Bowling Green in a game this season, and the first time this year the Falcons have allowed two home runs in a game. Bowling Green is now 5-29 all-time against the Wolverines.
Bowling Green (15-10) begins MAC play this Friday, in a battle with Ohio University at 1 p.m. on the road. The Falcons lead the all-time series 52-41.
