BOXSCORE
AKRON, Ohio. -- The Bowling Green State University softball team defeated Akron Saturday afternoon, shutting out the Zips 4-0. Junior Hannah Fulk went 2-for-3 in the contest, recording an RBI and a home run. Freshman Shelby Fink also had a big afternoon, going 2-for-3 with two RBI. Freshman Jamie Kertes picked up the win, allowing just four hits and recording seven strikeouts in the complete game shutout.
The bats were silent for both teams heading into the sixth inning, when Bowling Green scored three runs on three hits in the frame. Fulk opened the inning with a single down the third base line, before being moved over to second base on a sacrifice bunt. After Fulk stole third, junior Andrea Arney hit a single to left field, bringing home Fulk for the first run of the game. The Zips walked sophomore Katie Yoho, before Fink slapped a single to right field to bring home two more runs.
The Falcons added an insurance run in the top of the seventh, when Fulk belted a solo home run to push the score to 4-0 in favor of the Falcons. Kertes shut the door for the remainder of the contest, securing the Bowling Green victory.
“Today was a great team win; Jamie had fantastic control all game and did a great job of attacking her hitters,” said head coach Shannon Salsburg. “Offensively we had two really clutch hits from Andrea (Arney) and Shelby (Fink) that put us in control of the game. I am proud of our determination to find a way to get this victory and look forward to the rematch tomorrow.”
The 4-0 win gives the Falcons their eighth shutout win of the season, and marks their first MAC shutout since May 9, 2010, a Bowling Green 3-0 win over Kent State.
Kertes' victory marks her fourth complete-game shutout of the season, while her seven strikeouts tied a career best.
Fulk's fourth home run of the season snapped a nine-game home run drought, dating back to the Falcons 5-1 over George Mason (March 16, 2012).
Bowling Green (17-11, 2-1) is back in action tomorrow in an encore game against Akron. The first pitch is set for 1 p.m.
