Giese, Rogers, Slagle each earn two awards at Saturday's Women's Basketball Awards Banquet
Seniors Maribeth Giese and Jessica Slagle and redshirt sophomore Alexis Rogers each picked up a pair of awards as the Bowling Green State University women's basketball team celebrated another successful season Saturday afternoon (April 7). The BGSU Women's Basketball Awards Banquet was held in the Lenhart Ballroom of the Bowen Thompson Student Union.
Rogers was named the team's Player of the Year in a vote of team members, and also earned the team's Power-Player-of-the-Year Award. Giese was named the program's Scholar Athlete of the Year and also was the winner of the Falcon Award, which is given to the person or persons who embody qualities such as dedication, commitment, effort and being the ultimate team player. Slagle was named the team's Playmaker of the Year in addition to picking up the Fran and Marty Voll Senior Achievement Award.
Freshman Jasmine Matthews was named the team's Most Improved Player, while redshirt junior Danielle Havel and true junior Chrissy Steffen shared the Impact-Player-of-the-Year Award.
Giese earned the S-A-O-T-Y award for the second-straight season, having shared the honor with Maggie Hennegan a year ago.
Rogers, a native of West Chester, Ohio (Lakota West H.S.), was named to the All-Mid-American Conference First Team in her first playing season with the Falcons. A transfer from Duke University, she also was a WBCA Coaches' All-America Team honorable-mention selection in 2011-12, after being named one of 52 regional finalists. Rogers was named MAC Player of the Week three times. She started all 31 games, averaging 12.3 points and a team-leading 8.7 rebounds per game.
Rogers ranked second on the Falcons in scoring, and tied for the team lead in steals (55, 1.8 per game). She hit 18 three-point field goals, tying for third on the Falcons in that category. In MAC games only, she paced the Falcons in both scoring and rebounding in MAC games, with 15.1 ppg and 9.6 rpg. Rogers was the only player in the league to be ranked in the top-five in both categories, as she was fourth in scoring and second in rebounding in MAC games. She had 10 double-doubles, including seven in MAC regular-season play and one more in the conference tournament.
Giese, a native of Cincinnati, Ohio (Mother of Mercy), was medically disqualified in the preseason, seeing her playing career come to an end. She saw action in a total of 32 games in her career, and helped the Falcons to four MAC East Division titles and four trips to the national postseason. Giese, a political science major, has a perfect 4.00 cumulative grade-point average through the fall 2011 semester.
Slagle, a native of Sidney, Ohio (Lehman Catholic H.S.), was a team tri-captain and an All-MAC Second-Team selection in her senior season. She started all 31 games, averaging 12.2 points and 3.9 rebounds per game to rank third on the team in scoring and fourth in rebounding. Slagle also averaged a team-high 2.5 assists along with 1.5 steals per outing. In MAC games only, she scored 13.4 ppg to rank second on the team, and she led the Falcons with 3.1 assists. Normally a two guard, she moved to the point-guard position for the majority of her senior season and thrived at that spot. Slagle scored a career-high 23 points in her final collegiate game, vs. VCU in the WNIT. She earned MAC Player-of-the-Week honors on two occasions during her final season, and finished her career with totals of 726 points and 167 assists.
Matthews, who hails from Matteson, Ill. (Marian Catholic H.S.), was named to the MAC's All-Freshman Team in her first season on campus. She played in all 31 games, starting the last 21, and averaged 7.0 points per game to rank fourth on the team. Matthews also averaged 1.2 assists per contest and hit 51 three-point field goals, the second-highest total on the team. She shot 33.6 percent from long range and also was one of the Falcons' top defensive players in 2011-12.
Havel, a team tri-captain, is a native of Carmel, Ind. (Carmel H.S.). She started all 31 games in '11-12, averaging 6.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, 1.6 steals and 0.7 blocked shots per contest. Havel led the Falcons in blocks, and ranked second in rebounding, third in steals and fifth in scoring. She had double-digit scoring totals in three of the final four regular-season games, and more than doubled her totals from the 2010-11 season in nearly every statistical category.
Steffen, like Havel a native of Carmel, Ind. (Carmel H.S.), joined Havel and Slagle as 2011-12 team tri-captains. The Falcons' only returning starter from the 2010-11 season, she was chosen to the All-MAC Second Team in '11-12. Steffen started every game and led the team in scoring, with 13.2 points per game. She also had 5.0 rebounds, 1.9 assists and 1.8 steals per outing, tying for the team lead in steals and ranking second in assists and third in rebounding. Steffen paced the Falcons with 22 double-digit scoring games, including a BG-best six games of 20 points or more, and she hit a team-leading 53 three-point field goals on the year. Through three years in the Brown and Orange, Steffen has career totals of 853 points, 350 rebounds, 149 assists and 126 three-point field goals made.
After the welcome by Master of Ceremonies Larry Weiss and the invocation by Kaila Hulls on Saturday, the crowd of roughly 260 banquet-goers was treated to dinner and a spectacular season highlight video, with the latter coming courtesy of Julie Baker of BGSU Classroom Technology Services.
The team's two seniors – Giese and Slagle – had the opportunity to speak, sharing their thoughts and memories on their four years at BGSU. Additionally, the Falcons' first-year letterwinners – Rogers, Matthews and freshmen Deborah Hoekstra, Shanique Ogle and Logan Pastor – were presented with their varsity letter jackets.
The 2011-12 Falcons won a MAC divisional championship for the eighth-straight season, winning the East Division with a 14-2 league mark and going 24-7 overall. BGSU captured the MAC's overall regular-season title for the seventh time in those eight seasons, and the Brown and Orange advanced to national postseason play for the eighth consecutive March, making an appearance in the WNIT.
The team's two seniors were part of 108 wins during their time at BGSU, tied for the third-highest win total in a four-year span in both school and MAC history. The Falcons went 108-24 during that time, with trips to national postseason play in all four seasons. Giese and Slagle helped the Falcons go 56-8 in MAC regular-season action during those four seasons, and the Brown and Orange went 55-4 at home, including an incredible 31-1 mark in MAC home games, during that time.
