Softball Set For Midweek Home Opener With Valparaiso

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio. -- The Bowling Green State University softball (18-11, 3-1) team just completed their first MAC weekend of the season, finishing with a 3-1 record. Bowling Green started with a doubleheader on Friday against Ohio, winning the first game 4-2, before falling to the Bobcats 3-1 in the second tilt. The Falcons then traveled to Akron, where they swept the Zips (4-0 and 7-6) in a two-game set. The Falcons will now take on Valparaiso in a doubleheader Wednesday, marking their first action at home this season. The Falcons are 1-0 against Valparaiso all time, winning their only previous meeting 5-1 back in 2005.
Player of The Week Nominations
Andrea Arney, Bowling Green, Jr., IF, Navarre, Ohio. / Fairless
Andrea Arney, a junior from Navarre, Ohio, hit .385 with two homers and a slugging percentage of .923 as the Falcons went 3-1 in their first weekend of MAC play. Arney led Bowling Green in home runs (2) and RBI (7), and was tied for the team lead in runs (5), hits (5) and total bases (12). Arney's weekend was highlighted by a five RBI effort against Akron, thanks to a grand slam home run in the first inning of a 7-6 win.
Jamie Kertes, Bowling Green, Fr., P, Carnegie, Pa. / Bishop Canevin
Jamie Kertes, a freshman from Carnegie, Pa., went 2-0 over the weekend, including a complete game shutout win over Akron. Kertes carried a 0.00 ERA over the weekend, allowing 14 hits in 14.2 innings pitched. Kertes struck out 14 batters in three appearances, including three in a 1.2 inning save. Kertes' two wins helped the Falcons to a 3-1 record in their first weekend of MAC play.
Notes
- The Falcons are one victory away from 19 wins, their most in four seasons. The Falcons finished the 2008 season with an overall record of 19-24. Bowling Green has not eclipsed the 20-win mark since 2007, when the Falcons finished the season 33-12 overall.
- The Falcons lost both games to Kent State last season in their home opening doubleheader, and didn't record their first home victory until April 20, 2011 (14-0) against Detroit. The last time the Falcons won their home opener was in 2010, when Bowling Green defeated Central Michigan 6-4.
- Junior Andrea Arney's first career grand slam marks the first Bowling Green grand slam since March 8, 2011, when Adrienne Dick hit one in a 7-5 loss to Middle Tennessee State.
- Junior Hannah Fulk's walk in game two of the Akron series extends her streak to six games, setting a new season high. Fulk now has 26 walks this season, three more than her total last year. Hayley Weimer holds the Bowling Green record for most walks in a season with 37, set back in 2008.
- The Falcons have scored 118 runs this season, while allowing 91 runs scored against. Bowling Green continues to dominate in the opening frame, scoring 28 runs in the first inning this season.
