Baseball Hosts Bobcats This Weekend In MAC Action

The Bowling Green State University baseball team will host Ohio University in a key Mid-American Conference matchup this weekend at Warren E. Steller Field. The Falcons (16-24, 5-10 MAC) are coming off an 8-4 loss at Ohio State on Wednesday night, while Ohio (22-18, 11-4 MAC) is coming off a 12-1 loss at Eastern Kentucky on Tuesday.
Last Weekend
Bowling Green traveled to Oxford, Ohio for a MAC showdown with the Miami RedHawks. BG and Miami entered the weekend with identical 4-8 records in the league, but Miami would take the final two games of the series for the series win. The Falcons got off to a good start, winning Friday night, 7-2. Miami would bounce back for a 7-0 win on Saturday. Before taking the rubber-match on Sunday, 5-2.
Ohio took to the road for a weekend in Buffalo, sweeping the Bulls. On Friday, Ohio pulled out a 6-4 victory. The Bobcats defeated the Bulls 5-3 on Saturday, and 4-1 on Sunday to complete the sweep.
Tough At Home
Bowling Green has been a tough team to beat at Warren E. Steller Field this season, compiling a record of 8-2 to this point in the season. The Falcons are 4-2 in conference games, while sweeping the four non-conference games at home so far. BGSU has pulled out two extra inning games at home in 2012, defeating Kent State in 14 innings, and walking off against Central Michigan after 15 innings. Back on March 14, the Falcons defeated Malone 24-11, setting a school-record for hits in a single game with 30.
Scouting the Bobcats
Ohio enters the weekend with an overall record of 22-18, and a conference mark of 11-4. The Bobcats, who currently sit in second place, just one game behind MAC leader Kent State, have already matched their league win total from a season ago. Jake Madsen leads the Bobcats with a .365 average on the season. The freshman from Cincinnati, Ohio has eight doubles, one home run, and 27 RBI on the season. Jensen Painter has set the mark for offensive efficiency in the MAC this year, reaching base safely in all 40 games in 2012. Ohio enters the weekend with a team batting average of .289 and ERA of 3.45.
Forward Falcons
While the Falcons have struggled on the road in MAC play thus far (1-8), they have been pretty good at home (4-2), for an overall league record of 5-10. Bowling Green sits just one game back of the eighth and final spot for the MAC tournament with 12 games yet to play. Andrew Kubuski continues to lead the Falcons, with a batting average of .358. Kubuski has scored 25 runs on the season, while knocking in 26. Brian Bien has also been on a roll as of late, raising his average to .353 after a multi-hit performance at Ohio State on Wednesday night. Bien has eight doubles and one triple on the year, while stealing five bases. The Falcons bat .292 as a team, while the team ERA stands at 4.82 entering the weekend.
Coaching Experience
Both skippers bring impressive resumes to the table this weekend. Danny Schmitz is currently in his 22nd season, while Ohio's Joe Carbone is in his 24th. Carbone is currently second in MAC history in league and overall wins, while Schmitz is directly behind him in third.
