Pleger to Compete in Tucson Elite Classic
May 16, 2012 | Women's Track and Field
Brooke Pleger, a member of the Bowling Green State University track and field team, will travel to Tucson, Ariz., to compete in the Tucson Elite Classic, hosted by the University of Arizona on Thursday and Saturday.. The event, which will feature the top throwers in the country, will take place at Roy P. Drachman Stadium.
Pleger, who redshirted during the entire 2012 season, still competed “unattached” for the year, smashing the school record on several occasions in the weight throw. While the record still currently stands at 191-07 (Pleger's unattached results do not count), she still posted four marks higher than the current BGSU record.
Most impressive was her performance at the MSU Invite where she recorded a mark of 200-10. She added throws at the Ashland Alumni Open (196-10), Len Paddock (195-00) and Jesse Owens (193-06), all which would have been new Falcon records.
“The opportunity to go out to Tucson and throw in this meet will be a tremendous experience for Brooke,” said assistant coach Matt Conley. “The field of women she will get to compete against will be very comparable to what the field will look like at the Olympic Trials in June. So with losing big meets like the NCAA First Round and potentially the NCAA Championships during a redshirt season, this meet will provide her with the some of the big meet experience that she will miss by not being able to go to those meets. The value of that experience is something that will pay off for her next season. Brooke is very fortunate that he family was able to make this happen for her and I think she will take more away from this trip than she realizes at this point in time. Our staff and myself are extremely excited that she will get to take part in this meet.”
Pleger plans to archive her entire trip on video, so check back with BGSUFalcons.com next week for an inside look on her trip out west.
