Falcons Set For MAC Tournament
May 07, 2012 | Softball
MAC Tournament Bracket
The Falcons finished off the weekend with a 1-3 record, splitting their doubleheader with Miami on Friday, before falling to eventual MAC Regular Season Champion Ball State in two straight games over the remainder of the weekend. The Falcons finish the regular season with a record of 35-20 overall, and a record of 15-7 in MAC play, with both win totals setting new career highs for head coach Shannon Salsburg.
Bowling Green finished in the number two spot in the East Division, earning the third overall seed in the MAC Tournament. The second place finish in the East Division marks the Falcons highest finish since 2008, when they earned the second place finish with a MAC record of 14-5. Bowling Green will face the winner of the sixth and seventh seed matchup Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m., marking the team's first appearance in the MAC Tournament since 2010.
The Orange and Brown could potentially face Central Michigan (sixth seed) or Kent State (seventh seed) in the first game. The Falcons split with the Chippewas and the Golden Flashes in the regular season, going 1-1 against Kent State on the road, and 1-1 against Central Michigan at Meserve Field.
The Incredible Fulk
Junior Hannah Fulk comes to the end of the regular season with two Bowling Green records under her belt. Fulk now holds the record for most walks in a season (42) and home runs (13). Fulk now ranks second on the all-time walk list, with 92 walks earned in her career, needing 20 more walks to break Hayley Weimer's all-time record (121). Fulk's 21 home runs now rank fourth on the Bowling Green all-time list, trailing only Gina Rango (26), Paige Berger (30) and Hayley Weimer (32).
On The Run
The Falcons have scored a total of 222 runs this season, and now need only five more to tie the Bowling Green record for runs scored in a season. The Orange and Brown scored 227 runs in 2001, when they finished with a record 30-14.
On The Walk
The Falcons have earned 168 walks this season, shattering the previous record of 156 set in 2006.
Fun At Home
The Falcons finished with a record of 12-6 at home, and an even more impressive record of 6-2 in MAC play. Bowling Green's two losses (Central Michigan and Northern illinois) were both by only one run.
MAC Play
Bowling Green earned at least one conference win against every team this season except Ball State. The Falcons carried a five-game MAC winning streak earlier in the year, including sweeps against Buffalo, Eastern Michigan and a split with Central Michigan at home. Bowling Green was only held scoreless one time in conference play this season, failing to score against Ball State in a 5-0 loss this past weekend.
Regular Season Numbers
Hannah Fulk, Bowling Green, Jr., IF, Jeromesville, Ohio / Hillsdale
Junior Hannah Fulk did everything one could ask of a leadoff hitter, leading the Falcons in walks (42), on base percentage (.464), runs scored (49), and total bases. Fulk contributed heavily in the power game as well, leading the team in home runs (13) and slugging percentage (.650). Fulk's home run and walk total set individual Bowling Green single season records, and helped the Falcons to the country's best turn around with a 23-game improvement over last season. Fulk's 13 home runs helped make Bowling Green history, as the first time that multiple players recorded double-digit home runs in a single season for the Orange and Brown (Fulk, Arney and Yoho).
Paige Berger, Bowling Green, Jr., IF, Rootstown, Ohio / Rootstown
Junior Paige Berger had another phenomenal season for Bowling Green, leading the team in batting average (.329), doubles (15) and hits (57). Berger is quickly climbing the all-time Bowling Green home run list, and thanks to her seven home runs this season she is only three away from owning the number one spot (33). She is only one of four players on the team to start in every game this season (55).
Andrea Arney, Bowling Green, Jr., IF, Navarre, Ohio / Fairless
Junior Andrea Arney had a career year for the Orange and Brown, breaking several personal bests on the way to perhaps the biggest turnaround of anyone on the team. Arney led the Falcons in RBI (39), earning the third most in a single season in school history. Arney was also tied for second on the team with 10 home runs, more than doubling her career total coming into the season. Arney's 10 home runs helped make Bowling Green history, as the first time that multiple players recorded double-digit home runs in a single season for the Orange and Brown (Fulk, Arney and Yoho).
Katie Yoho, Bowling Green, So., OF, Grove City, Ohio / Grove City
Sophomore Katie Yoho ranks in the top three in nearly every offensive category for Bowling Green, including batting average (.313), slugging percentage (.571), on-base percentage (.378), hits (51), RBI (34), home runs (10) and total bases (93). Yoho's 10 home runs helped make Bowling Green history, as the first time that multiple players recorded double-digit home runs in a single season for the Orange and Brown (Fulk, Arney and Yoho).
Rachel Proehl, Bowling Green, Sr., IF, Kingston, Ohio / Zane Trace
Senior Rachel Proehl once again batted over .300 this season, marking the fourth consecutive year that she has achieved that number. Proehl led the Falcons in sacrifice bunts(12) in the two hole this season, aiding in the phenomenal success the Falcons saw at the top of the lineup. Proehl finishes her career with a lifetime batting average of .313, ranking sixth all time in BG history.
Paris Imholz, Bowling Green, Fr., P, Antioch, Calif. / Antioch
Freshman Paris Imholz set a new standard for Bowling Green pitching this season, earning a record of 17-9 on the season. Her 17 wins rank fifth all time in BG single season history, while her seven saves rank second on the all-time single season list. Imholz led the Falcons in nearly every pitching category, including ERA (1.85), complete games (10), innings pitched (182), average against (.236) and hits (160). Imholz allowed just 48 earned runs this season, while striking out 78 batters. Imholz was a part of Bowling Green history along with teammate Jamie Kertes, as both earned over 15 wins this season, marking the first time in the history of the program that two pitchers recorded double digit wins.
