Will join Rom and Kain in Omaha in late June
Bowling Green State University's Alexa Harris has qualified for the US Olympic Trials, joining two of her Falcon swimming teammates. Harris, Alexis Kain and Amanda Rom all will head to Omaha, Neb., for the trials in late June.
Harris qualified in the 200 backstroke on Sunday (June 17), with a time of 2:17.62 at the Columbia Swim Club Summer Invitational in Columbia, Mo. She needed a time of 2:17.99 to qualify.
"We are all very excited for Alexa," said BGSU head coach Petra Martin. "She literally made the cut in the 12th hour, as yesterday (Sunday) was the last day to qualify. Alexa has attempted to qualify several times over the last few months, and we are thrilled that she will join her teammates at the event."
Harris, a native of Moline, Ill. (Moline HS), will be a senior on Martin's 2012-13 team. Kain, who hails from Cincinnati, Ohio (Oak Hills HS), also will be a senior in the upcoming academic year, while fellow Cincinnati native Rom completed her BGSU career in '11-12. Rom is a product of Ursuline Academy.
Both Kain and Rom qualified for the US Olympic Trials in the 100 breast.
"Having these three swimmers at the Olympic Trials is a huge step forward for our program and we could not be happier," said Martin. "These ladies will bring back stories of some great experiences to tell the rest of the team, and we hope to keep building upon that.
"We hope to have more and more Falcons stepping up to the National level competitions in the very near future. It has been a lot of work, but we are starting to turn the corner. We are very excited about next season, and we are also very excited about these three women traveling to Omaha and competing at the highest level in USA Swimming."
The US Olympic Trials run from June 25 to July 2.
