BG News story on the uber-successful swimmer
Being a full-time student at the University is hard enough — try being a student athlete with a 4.0 GPA.
Senior Jennifer Beatty is one of those student athletes.
After eight semesters, Beatty has earned a perfect academic record while studying physical education.
“It's hard just being a student athlete, but maintaining a high GPA can be even more challenging,” Beatty said. “It's all about maintaining a good balance and time management.”
The redshirt junior has also competed on the University's swim team for four seasons and this year was named to the 2012 Capital One Academic All-District women's At-Large Team, according to the athletics website.
Such an honor was established to recognize the nation's top student-athletes, both competitively and in the classroom.
Beatty was selected as a first-team pick, which automatically makes her eligible for the Capital One Academic All-America Team — her name will be placed on the national ballot.
Since she was named to the Academic All-MAC team this year, she broke another record for being the first BG swimmer to be named to the team in back-to-back years since Jenny Kent earned it in 1991-92.
“I am honored to be named to the All-District First Team. It's an accomplishment that a lot of work has gone into,” Beatty said.
When she said a lot of work, she meant it. She set career-best times and earned spots in the consolation finals for the 100 and 200-yard freestyle in the 2012 MAC Championships.
Her time for the 100-yard freestyle preliminary race at the championships was 52 seconds, eighth best in BG history, along with the 200-yard freestyle which she capped at 1:51.
“It was a great achievement to set career bests this year in all of my events,” Beatty said. “There were changes made in my training and in my events … it took a little adjustment, but everything worked out wonderfully.”
Overall in her career at BG as a swimmer, Beatty has five records within the top 10 of BG swimming history.
“I hope to improve on this even more. This whole year was a blessing for me for different reasons,” Beatty said.
This upcoming season is her last year of eligibility on the team and she said she is looking to make it a memorable year.
“This summer I am training hard at home to stay strong and fit for the upcoming year,” Beatty said. “I hope I can contribute even more to the team next year.”
