With the win, the Vikings improve to 1-1-0 on the young season, while the Falcons drop to 0-2-0.
CSU's Chloe Fadenholz had tied the match midway through the second half, off of a short corner kick by Vickie Havas. Havas, who drew an assist on the Fadenholz goal, also had the assist on the Sieradzki winner.
BGSU freshman Jessica Jarvis had given the home team the lead with her first collegiate goal late in the first half. Jarvis took a pass from junior Tracy Togba and blasted a long shot over the reach of CSU starting goalkeeper Sarah Wood.
Becca Coleman earned the win in net for the Vikings. After entering the match at the start of the second half, she played the last 45 minutes of regulation as well as the overtime period, and made two saves without allowing a goal. Wood made four first-half stops for the visitors.
For the Falcons, fifth-year senior Becca Ison played all 96-plus minutes and made one save. The Falcons were also credited with a 'team save' in the overtime period as sophomore defender Kaylee Draper blocked a Sieradzki shot on the goal line.
The Falcons were buzzing in the CSU end of the pitch for much of the first half, including in the opening minute of Sunday's match. Senior Sarah VonderBrink stole the ball in the offensive end and played a cross through the box. No teammate was there, but Norris tracked it down and crossed the ball back through the penalty area from the other direction.
With under three minutes gone, another Norris cross was just over the head of the leaping VonderBrink. VonderBrink got her head on an entry ball from junior Ivi Casagrande less than 10 minutes into the match, but her shot was hit directly at Wood.
Midway through the opening half, junior Madeline Wideman's through ball, intended for VonderBrink, was just a little too far out of the reach of the BG striker, and Wood gathered it in.
Soon after, junior Kaitlyn Tobin put Togba through on the right side, but Togba's shot was hit directly at Wood, who made the stop. With 16 minutes left in the period, sophomore Sidney Huth beat Wood to the ball on the end line. Huth played a crossing ball through the vacated goalmouth, but it rolled past the far post where a CSU defender cleared it out of danger.
Late in the half, however, Jarvis got the Falcons on the scoreboard with an impressive first collegiate goal. Jarvis took a pass from Togba on the right side of the pitch, just outside the penalty area. She took a dribble to her left and uncorked a blast from approximately 20 yards out. Wood made a leaping effort, but the CSU 'keeper had no chance as the strike found the upper-left corner of the goal.
Three minutes later, Jarvis got her head on a diagonal ball from classmate Haley Parkinson, but the shot was directly at Wood, who made the stop.
A minute after that play, some good work by Tobin nearly put Huth in all alone, but the assistant referee's flag went skyward at the very last moment, indicating offside against the Falcons.
Less than a minute later, though, sophomore Ashley Garr did indeed put Huth in all alone, playing a bouncing ball past the final line of Viking defenders. Huth ran onto the ball as Wood charged off of her goal line. Huth tried to bloop a shot over the head of the onrushing CSU 'keeper, but the shot sailed over the crossbar.
The Falcons had some late pressure as well, as junior Alyssa Carmack had two corner kicks, plus an additional crossing ball, in the final two minutes of the period. But, the Vikings managed to keep the margin at a single goal heading into the halftime break.
Ten minutes into the second half, Huth was again at the heart of a BG attack. The sophomore faked a cross, cut the ball back to elude a defender, then played a ball from the left corner of the pitch. The cross sailed just over the head of leaping freshman Demy Whitaker. Moments later, Coleman knocked a cross by VonderBrink out of the six-yard box with Huth lurking on the doorstep.
Midway through the period, a corner kick by Carmack was put on goal, but the Vikings' Jen Jankowski knocked the ball away. The rebound went to Draper, but her follow-up try sailed high of the target.
The Vikings had had only three total shot attempts in the first 67 minutes of the match, with two of those shots off target and the other attempted blocked by a BG defender. CSU's first shot on goal, however, found the back of the net.
Havas took a corner kick from the left side, and played a short pass to Fadenholz, on the left side of the penalty area. Fadenholz settled the ball and fired, and the shot found its way through a maze of players and into the far side of the net. At that point in the match, the Falcons had a 9-4 advantage in shots, but the match was tied.
The goal gave the Vikings some momentum, but neither team had another shot attempt until just over 11 minutes remained in regulation. BG built the attack, with Norris, VonderBrink and Draper stringing passes together. Draper played a right-side diagonal ball into the box, where a CSU defender got a body part on it. The ball caromed directly to Wideman in the center of the field, and the BG junior tried to beat Coleman with a 15-yard shot toward the lower corner of the net. But, the Viking goalie made a diving stop to keep the game tied.
In the final 10 minutes of the half, two Casagrande crosses nearly found the head of VonderBrink, but the two missed connections by mere inches on both occasions. Just after the second play, the Vikings quickly countered, and Ison was forced to dive on a Taylor Vidovic cross, just seconds before CSU's Kelcey Fischer could get to the ball.
In overtime, Sieradzki nearly ended the match with just over two minutes gone. A teammate played the ball forward, and Ison attempted to gather it in at the top of the box. As she went to the ground, however, Sieradzki also made an effort for the ball. The two collided as the ball bounded away.
With Ison on the ground, Sieradzki tracked down the loose ball near the goal line, to the right of the goal, and brought it along the line with Ison and several BG defenders in hot pursuit. Sieradzki attempted a shot from only a yard or two out, but Draper blocked the shot on the goal line. The ball caromed off of Sieradzki and popped up and over the crossbar. Draper's 'team save' kept the match tied.
Moments later, however, Sieradzki got another chance. She received an entry ball from Havas and deposited it in the back of the net to give her team the victory.
The Falcons held a 14-8 advantage in total shot attempts, including a 7-4 margin in shots on goal. After BGSU had eight shots to the Vikings' two in the first half, each team had four shot attempts in the second half and two in the overtime period.
The Falcons conclude a season-opening three-match homestand next Sunday (Aug. 26), hosting IUPUI. That match is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. at Cochrane Field.
