Falcons Host IUPUI in Sunday Matinee

Evans and the Falcons will be looking to break into the win column in the IUPUI match. BGSU opened the season with a 4-0 loss to Michigan State on Friday night (Aug. 17), before falling in overtime, 2-1, against Cleveland State two days later (Aug. 19). In the MSU match, the Spartans scored three times in a three-and-a-half-minute span in the first 13 minutes of the opening half. State added a goal late in the match to provide the final margin.
Against Cleveland State, freshman Jessica Jarvis gave the Falcons the lead with her first collegiate goal late in the first half. Junior Tracy Togba assisted on the Jarvis goal, which was a blast from approximately 20 yards out. But, the Vikings equalized midway through the second half, then CSU's Allie Sieradzki scored a 'Golden Goal' six minutes into overtime to give the visitors the win.
Evans and assistant coach Bubby Leasure have used the bench liberally in the first two matches. A total of 21 different players saw action in the Michigan State match, and 20 Falcons got onto the pitch against Cleveland State.
Three of those Falcons, a redshirt sophomore and two true sophs, already have surpassed or are approaching their minutes-played totals for their entire BGSU careers. Redshirt soph Amanda Nelson missed the entire 2010 season due to injury before seeing action in one match, playing six minutes, last fall. This season to date, Nelson has played in both games and has been on the field for a total of 17 minutes.
Sophomores Lindsey Adshade and Lindsey Thompson each played sparingly last season. Adshade saw 18 minutes of action over two games, while Thompson played in one match for a total of three minutes. This year, Adshade has played in both games, for 16 minutes, while Thompson saw 14 minutes of work in the MSU match.
Junior Alyssa Carmack, who led the team in minutes played last season, again paces the Falcons in that category this fall to date. Carmack played 1830 of the Falcons' 1834 total minutes last year. She played every second of both the MSU and CSU matches, and also was on the pitch for all 90 minutes of the exhibition match vs. Indiana State.
Fifth-year senior goalkeeper Becca Ison is the only other Falcon to have played every minute of the first two regular-season contests. Ison made four saves against the Spartans and one stop vs. the Vikings.
IUPUI, like BGSU, enters the weekend with a record of 0-2-0. The Jaguars host Cleveland State Friday evening before coming to BG for Sunday's match. Last weekend, IUPUI suffered a 1-0 loss at Valparaiso in the season opener, then dropped a 5-0 home decision to MAC member Miami. Head coach Chris Johnson welcomed back 13 letterwinners, including five starters, from the 2011 team that finished 3-12-4 overall and 2-6-1 in the Summit League.
Sunday will mark the first-ever meeting between BGSU and IUPUI in women's soccer.
Following this weekend's match, the Falcons will hit the road for the first time this season. BGSU will travel to Minneapolis, Minn., for a pair of matches, taking on Minnesota on Thursday (Aug. 30) and meeting Western Kentucky in neutral-site action two days later (Saturday, Sept. 1).
