Falcons Announce 2012-13 Women's Basketball Schedule
August 29, 2012 | Women's Basketball
First year of the Jennifer Roos Era includes seven non-conference games at the Stroh Center

BGSU Women's Basketball 2012-13 Schedule
The non-conference slate in 2012-13 includes two games against Big Ten Conference opponents, no fewer than four games vs. Atlantic 10 Conference foes and three games against schools from the Mountain West Conference foes. BGSU also has matchups with teams from the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC), Big East Conference and Conference USA.
"I have been involved with the Bowling Green program for 12 years, and the schedule for this season is the most arduous that we have ever put together," said Roos. "We will be competing against BCS competition throughout the non-conference schedule, against multiple teams from the Big Ten and Big East conferences. In addition, our mid-major opponents have some of the best women's basketball traditions in the country."
The non-league schedule includes trips to five different states, including a tournament in Las Vegas, Nev., as well as a total of seven contests inside the friendly confines of the Stroh Center. After playing four of the season's first five games on the road, the Falcons then play nine of the next 11 contests at home, including a five-game homestand that carries into the conference schedule.
Among those trips is a visit to West Lafayette, Ind., to face defending Big Ten Tournament champion Purdue on Nov. 19. The Boilermakers played in the first women's basketball regular-season game in the Stroh Center last November, posting a one-point win, 54-53.
The home schedule includes visits from a pair of 23-win teams from a year ago, as Temple (Nov. 28) and Dayton (Dec. 30) each come to the Stroh Center to face the Falcons. Dayton is one of three 2012 NCAA Tournament participants on the schedule, while Temple advanced to the WNIT a year ago. In all, the Falcons could play as many as 10 games against schools that participated in national postseason play in the 2011-12 season.
BG also will host two MWC schools in Colorado State (Dec. 1) and Wyoming (Dec. 16). The Brown and Orange headed west and defeated both the Rams and the Cowboys last winter.
The Falcons' other trips include a Thanksgiving-weekend jaunt to Las Vegas to participate in the Lady Rebel Round-Up on Nov. 24-25. BGSU will face Villanova in the first round, then will meet either Montana or the host school, UNLV, the following day.
After hosting Madonna (Nov. 10) in the regular-season opener, the Falcons then hit the road for the next four games, including trips to Niagara (Nov. 15), Purdue and Las Vegas. Temple comes to the Stroh Center to close the November schedule, and Colorado State arrives three days later to begin the December slate.
That CSU game is the middle contest in a three-game homestand which concludes with a Dec. 5 game against Butler. The Falcons then return to the road to take on the Big Ten's Northwestern (Dec. 9), before hosting Wyoming a week later.
The pre-Christmas schedule concludes with a Dec. 19 game at Massachusetts, and the Falcons then begin a five-game homestand which includes two non-league games and the first three MAC matchups of the season.
BGSU ends 2012 with the Dayton game, then begins '13 by hosting UCF (Jan. 4) to close the non-league schedule.
Again this season, the MAC schedule sees BGSU face each of the East Division schools twice and each West Division program once. However, in a change from recent years, the cross-divisional games do not come in the middle of the schedule, but are interspersed with the intra-divisional matchups.
The league schedule begins with three home games in a week's time, as the Falcons face Kent State (Jan. 10), Toledo (Jan. 13) and Ball State (Jan. 16). Following the conclusion of that homestand, the Brown and Orange then will play six road games in the next eight contests.
The month of January ends with the Falcons playing three of four games on the road. After a game at Ohio (Jan. 20), the Falcons return home to face Miami (Jan. 24) before ending the month with contests at Eastern Michigan (Jan. 27) and Akron (Jan. 31). EMU won the MAC Tournament and advanced to the NCAA Championships in March.
February begins with a game against Central Michigan, the team that knocked BGSU out of the 2012 league tourney, on Feb. 3. The Falcons then return to the road, playing games at Buffalo (Feb. 7) and Western Michigan (Feb. 10) just three days apart. The following weekend sees the Brown and Orange head to the MAC's 'West Coast' for a Feb. 16 game at Northern Illinois.
BG's final five regular-season games all are against East Division opponents, including home games against Akron (Feb. 20), Buffalo (Feb. 28) and Ohio (March 3). The road games during that time include trips to Miami (Feb. 23) and KSU (March 6). BG concludes the regular season at Kent State for the second-straight year, after clinching the 2012 MAC regular-season title with a victory over the Golden Flashes.
"There is a strong likelihood that as many as five teams within our conference could receive first-place votes to win the MAC title when the preseason poll comes out," said Roos. "And, potentially even more teams could make postseason play. The parity in the league is the best that it has ever been, and that is directly attributed to the strong coaching staffs within the Mid-American Conference."
For the 2012-13 Falcons and their fans, the fun begins on Saturday, Nov. 3, with an exhibition game vs. Slippery Rock at the Stroh Center. The 16-game home schedule (15 regular-season games plus the exhibition) includes three Saturday and five Sunday contests.
The Falcons are coming off of a 24-7 season, in which BG went 14-2 in the MAC en route to an East Division title. BGSU has won some sort of regular-season crown in each of the last eight seasons, including seven outright titles during that time. BGSU advanced to the WNIT in 2011-12, marking the Falcons' eighth-straight season with a national postseason appearance. Roos and the Falcons return nine letterwinners, including four starters, from last year's club.
