Huth scores BGSU's lone goal in neutral-site match

Despite holding advantages in shot attempts and shots on goal, the Bowling Green State University women's soccer team fell, 2-1, to Western Kentucky University on Saturday afternoon (Sept. 1). The non-conference match was held at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium in St. Paul, Minn.

With the win, the Lady Toppers improve to 4-1-0 on the season. The Falcons drop to 1-4-0 on the year.

WKU got a pair of goals just over seven minutes apart, spanning the halftime break. Torrie Lange broke a scoreless tie with just 1:19 remaining in the opening period, and Chrissy Tchoula doubled her team's lead at the 50:54 mark.

The Falcons cut the deficit in half in the 67th minute of the match, as sophomore Sidney Huth scored her first goal of the year, with an assist from freshman Demy Whitaker. Whitaker now has a team-leading two assists this fall.

"This was another tough result for us," said BGSU coach Kellie Evans. "Our team battled again today, but we gave away a goal right before halftime, which gave us a lot more work to do.

"We absorbed some stuff in the first half, had a couple good looks, but we were looking to go into the half tied, make some adjustments and hopefully generate a little more attack in the second half. But, we instead found ourselves down a goal.

"We kept pushing in the second half, generated a little more in the attack, and got soe more people involved. Demy found Sidney Huth for a goal, and then we just kept pushing forward. We definitely had a lot of good looks in the second half, and had some chances to tie it up."

Indeed, following Huth's goal, BGSU had five more shot attempts over the remainder of the contest, putting four of those five shots on frame, but the Falcons could not get another ball past WKU goalkeeper Nikki Hall. Hall made seven saves on the afternoon.

At the other end of the pitch, senior Becca Ison made three stops for the Falcons. BGSU had a 14-9 advantage in total shots, including an 11-5 margin in the second half, and the Brown and Orange had eight shots on goal to the Lady Toppers' five.

Whitaker led the Falcons with four shot attempts, and both Whitaker and Huth put two shots on goal.

"We're just looking to put together a full 90-minute game," said Evans. "There were some bright spots today, to be sure, but we need to put together a full game, which is what it is going to take for us to get a result.

"We got some good performances today. Ashley Garr came off the bench and did really well for us, providing a much-needed spark and continuing to battle in the midfield. Sidney had good composure on the ball, and Demy held the ball well for us and gave Sidney a good pass.

"Haley Parkinson had a great day at outside back, and we had a number of other good performances from other players as well. We are happy with some of those individual efforts, but we need to go back to the drawing board and figure out how to put it all together for 90 minutes."

BGSU will return home to prepare for one match next weekend. The Falcons will hit the road to face Valparaiso University on Sunday, Sept. 9. BGSU then begins a season-long four-match homestand with a match vs. Illinois State University on Friday, Sept. 14.
