Keefe Courts are located on Stadium Drive, between Steller Field (baseball) and the Meserve Softball Field. Some BGSU Invitational matches will be held at Bowling Green High School. Play begins at 9:00 a.m. each day.
Head coach Penny Dean and the Falcons will host a tourney field that includes Cincinnati, Cleveland State, Duquesne, IPFW, IUPUI, Miami, Toledo and Xavier. Team scores will not be kept, but individual champions will be crowned at each of the seven singles and four doubles flights.
Dean's eight-player roster includes four seniors, two juniors and a pair of freshmen. The senior class consists of co-captains Maddy Eccleston (Toledo, Ohio) and Mary Hill (Munster, Ind.) as well as Katie Grubb (Elkhart, Ind.) and Jade Johnson (Fort Wayne, Ind.). Nikki Chiricosta (Avon Lake, Ohio) and Emily Reuland (Oswego, Ill.) comprise the junior class, while Katie Brozovich (Clarkston, Mich.) and Drew Fillis (Toledo, Ohio) are in their first year with the Falcons.
This season marks the first time since 1997-98 that the Falcons have not opened the season at home. Four members of the team participated in the Muirfield Collegiate Tennis Invitational, hosted by Ohio State, last weekend.
Chiricosta and Reuland advanced all the way to the championship match of the doubles bracket at the Muirfield event, and Reuland won her way to the semifinal round of the singles bracket before losing to the event's top-seeded player.
On the weekend, Reuland went 6-2 overall, including 3-1 marks in both singles and doubles, while Chiricosta was 5-2, going 2-1 in singles and 3-1 with Reuland in doubles play. Eccleston was 4-4 overall, including a 2-2 doubles mark with Brozovich.
In her first competition as a Falcon, Brozovich played no fewer than 10 matches, going 6-4 overall. She had a 4-2 singles record, and her two losses each came in third-set super tiebreakers.
In last year's BGSU Invitational, Dean and assistant coach Cindy Yonker saw their Falcons win a total of five flight championships, as BG competitors combined for a 27-6 record on the weekend. Reuland won championships at both the fourth singles flight and the third level of doubles. She has a perfect 12-0 record at the BGSU Invitational in her collegiate career, with two singles and two doubles crowns in her first two years.
Additionally, the 2011 BGSU Invitational saw Grubb and Eccleston win singles crowns for the second-straight year. Eccleston won a title at the third flight, while Grubb's eighth-flight championship saw her lose a total of just 11 games in her six singles sets on the weekend.
Chiricosta captured the singles title at the top flight last year as BG won four of the eight singles flights. Last year's success came after BG players combined for five singles crowns and a pair of doubles championships at the 2010 event.
Several other players return after winning titles at the 2011 BGSU Invitational. Xavier's Andrea Wolf (second flight) and Ally Westling (seventh flight) captured crowns for the Musketeers last year, while Duquesne's Chandler Consonary and Cleveland State's Alex Power won at the fifth and sixth flights, respectively.
Additionally, Toledo's Chrissy Coffman and Lexy Pitt won a doubles title at the second flight last September. Both players are on the 2012-13 UT roster, but Coffman and Pitt are not scheduled to play as a doubles team this weekend.
The BGSU Invitational is the second of four total tourneys on the Falcons' fall schedule. BGSU will venture to the Glass City for Toledo's Rocket Invitational (Oct. 12-13) and to Kalamazoo, Mich., for the WMU Super Challenge (Nov. 9-11), hosted by Western Michigan.
