Three BGSU singles competitors advance to championship matches

UPDATED BRACKETS - through completion of Friday's matches
Friday's action in the two-day, nine-team tournament was held at Keefe Courts on the BGSU campus as well as at Bowling Green High School. Team scores are not being kept, but individual champions will be crowned at each of the seven singles and four doubles flights.
Three Falcons advanced to the championship round in their respective flights. That list included juniors Emily Reuland and Nikki Chiricosta at singles flights one and two, respectively. Senior Katie Grubb also won a pair of single matches to advance to the final at the sixth flight.
Chiricosta and Reuland combined for a first-round victory at the top doubles flight, giving each player a perfect 3-0 record in Friday action. The first day saw one round of doubles and two rounds of singles completed, minus one singles match which was halted due to the rain which moved into the Bowling Green area at roughly 6:30 p.m.
BGSU's other two doubles teams that were able to compete on Friday also posted opening-round wins. At the third flight, senior Jade Johnson combined with freshman Drew Fillis for an 8-4 victory over a Cincinnati duo on Friday morning. And, the Falcons' fourth-flight team of freshman Katie Brozovich and senior #Mary Hill picked up an 8-3 victory in their first match of the weekend.
For Fillis, Friday's doubles action represented her first-ever competition as a Falcon. After posting a win in that match, Fillis began her collegiate singles career with a victory as well, downing Duquesne's Alrissa Tobe at the seventh flight before falling in second-round action.
Brozovich, who began her BGSU career at last weekend's Muirfield Collegiate Tennis Invitational, split her two singles matches on Friday, as did Hill. Hill, who played at the fourth flight, lost her first match, but bounced back for a straight-sets win over Toledo's Pia Rygh. Brozovich downed the Rockets' Katelyn Nguyen, also in straight sets, before losing to IPFW's Theresa Neumeyer in a third-set tiebreaker.
Johnson, originally slated to play several non-flighted singles matches this weekend, was placed in the third-flight bracket when senior Maddy Eccleston was unable to compete due to illness on Friday. Eccleston was also slated to compete with Grubb in the second doubles flight, but BGSU lost that match by default.
Reuland now has a perfect 15-0 record in BGSU Invitational matches in her career. She is 8-0 in singles and 7-0 in doubles after winning titles in both singles and doubles in each of her first two seasons with the Falcons.
Grubb, like Reuland, is looking to win a singles championship at the BGSU Invite for the third consecutive September. Chiricosta is one win away from a second-straight singles crown after winning three matches at the top flight last season.
The 2012 edition of the BGSU Invitational is scheduled to conclude with two rounds of doubles matches and the final round of singles play on Saturday (Sept. 22). In the event of inclement weather, the invite will be held at multiple venues in the Toledo area.
