BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University swim team starts off the new year with a dual meet on Saturday against Mid-American Conference opponent Eastern Michigan in Jones Natatorium on the campus of EMU. The Falcons currently have an 0-2 record in the MAC, but are coming off of two strong performances at the Northwestern TYR Invitational and AT&T Winter National Championships.
"We are excited to travel to Eastern this weekend," said head coach Petra Martin. "We had a great training camp the last few weeks and got some very good work done. We're looking forward to getting back into competitive mode and trying out all the things that we have been polishing up."
The Falcons will face a tough challenge from Eastern Michigan, who is 2-0 in MAC competition and suffered its first loss of the season last week at the FIU Invitational. The Eagles have yet to lose at home this year, overtaking defending MAC champion Toledo on Nov. 3 in Jones Natatorium.
Bowling Green has steadily improved through the fall season, performing well at the TYR Invitational to finish third behind two Big Ten schools and then earning a spot in two finals races at the U.S. Winter Nationals.
Junior transfer Joëlle Scheps has elevated the Falcons, adding her name to the school's record book in four separate events. Sprinter Brittany Szekely led the team at nationals, breaking the school record in the 100 freestyle (50.31) and setting a career best in the 50 free as well (23.14). Seniors Emily Bennet and Alexa Harris also continue to improve, with Bennet swimming career bests in the 100 backstroke (56.90) and 100 free (50.43) at nationals, while Harris swam a career best in the 100 backstroke (56.04) and advanced to the C final in the 200 backstroke.
The contest between the Eagles and the Falcons is set to begin Saturday at 1 p.m.
