Senior Emily Reuland won a pair of matches in the singles qualifying draw, while classmate Nikki Chiricosta won her lone match on the opening day of the six-day event. The University of Michigan is hosting this year's regional event, which is being held at the Varsity Tennis Center.
"I couldn't be more proud of our players today," said BGSU head coach Penny Dean. "Winning four out of five matches at this level of competition is outstanding. The Falcons will look to build on this success and compete just as hard tomorrow."
Chiricosta, as one of the top-four seeds in the top half of the bracket, earned a first-round bye. She faced Annie Wierda of the host school in the second round, and captured a win in straight sets. In fact, all four of BGSU's wins on Thursday came in two sets, while the Falcons' lone loss was in three sets.
But we digress. Chiricosta outlasted Wierda in an opening-set tiebreaker, then used the momentum of that first-set win to capture the match with a 6-3 decision in the second set.
Reuland rolled through her Thursday matches, losing a total of just five games in her four sets. The senior defeated Kadi Ilves of Illinois State in her morning match, winning two sets by identical 6-2 scores. On Thursday afternoon, Reuland faced Linsey Verstrepen of Wright State, and lost only one game, rolling along to a 6-1, 6-0 win and a trip to the round of 16.
On Friday (Oct. 11), Chiricosta will face Ohio State's Grainne O'Neill, while Reuland will meet Jillian Rooney of Northwestern. The winners of those two matches, and eight qualifying-round survivors in all, earn a trip to the singles main draw, which begins on Saturday (Oct. 12).
Sophomore Katie Brozovich also competed in Thursday's singles qualifying draw. Brozovich lost her opening-round match to Louise Kwong of Illinois in three sets. She bounced back for a 6-1, 6-2 win over Wright State's Elaine Cloern in a consolation match.
Friday play at the ITA Midwest Regional Championships begins at 9:00 a.m., with the round of 16 in the qualifying singles draw. Then, the first round of doubles is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m. Chiricosta and Reuland, as mentioned, each will play a singles match on Friday, and the duo then will pair up for the doubles portion of the tourney. The BG seniors received a first-round bye, and will face either the Northwestern duo of Lok Sze Leung and Manon Peri, or the Western Michigan team of Kathleen Hawkins and Nini Sujashvili.
