Falcons will look to improve upon last season's third place finish
CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University swimming team has been picked to finish second in the Mid-American Conference, according to the Preseason Coaches' Poll. The results were released on Friday afternoon by the Mid-American Conference Office.
The Falcons, who will look to improve upon last season's third place finish at the MAC Championships, were picked second behind only Miami. The third place finish for the program was the best finish since they also finished third in the 2003-04 season.
Head coach Petra Martin has resurrected the program since taking over in 2010-11. After a sixth- and eighth-place finish in her first two seasons, the Falcons quickly rose to third place last year in just her third season. With the dual-meet season just two weeks away, the Falcons will look to continue building upon last season's success.
The Orange and Brown return five swimmers who currently hold individual school records. In the 100 free, Brittany Szekely returns after setting a school record during the 2012 calendar year with a time of 50.31. #Joëlle Scheps# is back for her senior season in 2013-14, after setting the school record in the 200 free last season. Emily Waller rounds out the list of returners who hold records in the freestyle events, as her mark of 4:53.98 in the 500 free last season is the best in school history. Jordan Bullock (200 butterfly) and Daniela Carrillo (100 and 200 breaststroke) also are back. In total, the Falcons return 15 swimmers from last season's team which finished third.
The season begins in just 15 days, as the Falcons travel to Eastern Michigan for a dual meet with the Eagles. The Orange and Brown will host just one dual meet during the 2013-14 season, as the Student Recreation Center is currently undergoing construction.
