Series Info
*Friday's game between Bowling Green and Buffalo will be the 11th all-time meeting, with the Falcons leading the series 7-3.
*The two teams have met every year since 2005, with Bowling Green winning 5-of-8 games during that stretch.
*The two teams met last year at Columbus Crew Stadium, a 21-7 win for BGSU.
THE COACHING STAFF
*Head coach Dave Clawson is in his fifth season at the helm of the football team with a career record of 88-80, which includes a 30-31 mark at BGSU. He is 22-17 in Mid-American Conference games.
*For the fifth consecutive year the Falcons will have all three coordinators returning. Warren Ruggiero, Mike Elko and Adam Scheier will coach offense, defense and special teams.
*BGSU is the only program in the MAC that can boast having the same head coach and coordinators for five years running.
THE REBUILD IS COMPLETE
*Following a trip to the Humanitarian Bowl in 2009, BGSU Head Coach Dave Clawson knew he had an arduous rebuilding job ahead of him. The Falcons slumped to 2-10 in 2010 but have rebounded by winning three more games than the previous season in each of the past two years. The Falcons are one of just four FBS teams to have made a three-win increase or better in each of the past two seasons and the only one of those teams that could improve again in 2013.
THE CAPTAINS
*BGSU Head Coach Dave Clawson has named eight captains for the 2013 season -- Alex Bayer, Jairus Campbell, Dominic Flewellyn, BooBoo Gates, Ronnie Goble, Chief Kekuewa, Gabe Martin and Paul Swan.
*The group represents three players on the offensive side of the ball (Bayer, Flewellyn and Kekuewa) and five on defense (Campbell, Gates, Goble, Martin and Swan).
*Three of this year's captains were also captains a year ago -- Flewellyn, Goble and Swan.
DIVING INTO 8-3 and 6-1
*In jumping out to an 8-3 start, Bowling Green defeated a pair of teams (Tulsa and Kent State) that each won 11 games a year ago.
*The Falcons handed Kent State its first regular season MAC loss since Nov. 25, 2011 at Temple.
*Bowling Green has started a season 8-3 for the first time since the 2004 team that advanced to the GMAC Bowl in Mobile, Ala.
WHAT A WIN WOULD MEAN
*A win on Friday would make the Falcons 9-3 for the first time since 2004. That 2004 team finished the regular season 8-3, but improved to 9-3 with the GMAC Bowl win over Memphis.
*With a win on Friday, the Falcons would finish MAC play at 7-1 for the first time since 2004.
*A win over the Bulls would be the third straight for the Orange and Brown in the series.
*Bowling Green would win the East Division with a win over the Bulls on Friday. The last division title for the Falcons came in 2003, when they won the MAC West Division.
BREAKING THE #MACTION MOLD
*When fans hear the phrase #MACtion, most think of the offensive fireworks by Mid-American Conference schools featured in weeknight games on national television. But Bowling Green has broken that mold with a stifling defense.
*The Falcons return nine starters in 2013 from a defense that ranked sixth in the country in total defense in 2012, allowing just 296 yards per game.
*Through the first 11 games of the season, the Falcons lead the MAC in scoring defense (14.4), total defense (302.1), rushing defense (145.7), passing defense (156.4), pass defense efficiency (109.4), first down defense (16.0), and red zone defense (56.0) .
NEWS AND NOTES FROM EMU
*The 58-7 win on Saturday was the Falcons' biggest win since Oct. 1, 2005, a 70-7 win vs. Temple. It was the largest offensive output for BGSU since scoring 58 vs. Morgan State on Sept. 10, 2011.
*The 65 total yards allowed by the BGSU defense and 4 passing yards allowed were the best in the Dave Clawson era.
*The Falcons' 296 rushing yards were the most under Dave Clawson, surpassing 292 yards against Akron last season.
*BGSU's 560 yards of total offense were the fourth most in the Clawson era, and the third highest output this year.
*BGSU has now scored 45 points in three straight games, the first time since 2002. It was the 5th time BGSU has scored 40-or-more points this season.
*The Bowling Green defense has not allowed a touchdown in three consecutive games, and has not allowed points in 11 consecutive quarters.
*Over the past 14 quarters, BGSU is outscoring opponents 170-17.
*The four first downs allowed by Bowling Green on defense were one off the school record of three, set against Defiance in 1956.
*Travis Greene's 126 yards on Saturday moved him into third all-time for a single season with 1,293 yards. He is 121 short of Dave Preston's mark for second all-time. He is just 151 shy of Fred Durig's all-time mark of 1,444 yards. Travis Greene now has three multi-TD games rushing this season, and four overall multi-TD games. Saturday was also the seventh time he has gone over 100 yards in a game this season, and sixth time in MAC play.
*Matt Johnson's 264 yards put him at 2,572 for the season. he is 38 yards shy of moving into the top 10 for a single season.
*Ronnie Moore's seven catches for 161 yards and three TDs were all a career high for the true freshman. It was the first time since Eugene Cooper's four receiving TDs on Sept. 10, 2011 vs. Morgan State that a Falcon receiver has scored three or more times in a game.
*Tyler Tate converted a career-high three FGs and 7 PATs in the game, for a career-high of 16 points in a game.
*Will Watson's scoop-and-score marked his first career fumble recovery and touchdown.
*Isaiah Gourdine recorded his first career interception in the game.
*William Houston's 44-yard scamper up the middle was his 11th touchdown of the season. It was his first TD from outside two yards this season.
A DOMINANT STRETCH
*Bowling Green has been dominant over the past three games, not allowing a touchdown on defense while outscoring opponents 152-10.
*During the past 14 quarters of play, the Falcons have outscored opponents 170-17.
IMPENETRABLE D
*Bowling Green allowed just 65 total yards on Saturday at Eastern Michigan, the best performance in the Dave Clawson era.
*The Falcons forced three turnovers while allowing just four passing yards, also the best under Clawson.
10 POINTS IN THREE GAMES?
*BGSU has allowed just 10 points over the past three games, and just three of them while the defense was on the field.
*The last time that the Falcons allowed 10 points or less in a three game stretch came in 1972, when the Falcons surrendered just seven points over a three game span.
45 POINTS IN THREE STRAIGHT GAMES
*The Falcons have exploded offensively as of late, scoring at least 45 points in three consecutive games. The last time a Falcon team had a three-game stretch which they scored at least 45 points in each game came in 2002.
*BGSU has scored 40 points in five different games this season, the most since the Falcons scored 40 points in seven straight games during the 2004 season.
AN EXPERIENCED CREW
*Bowling Green returns nine starters on defense and eight more on offense from the 2012 team. In fact, it is the second year in a row in which the Falcons return 17 starters between the two units.
*Entering 2013, BGSU's returners accounted for 182 career starts on offense and 214 on defense for a grand total of 396 career starts.
*Four Falcons entered 2013 with at least 30 career starts (Matt Schilz, Dominic Flewellyn, Alex Bayer and Cameron Truss) and three more had at least 20 (Ryland Ward, BooBoo Gates and Paul Swan).
RED HOT IN THE RED ZONE
*In its eight wins, Bowling Green has been 37-of-40 scoring on trips in the red zone. All three of the unsuccessful attempts came when the Falcons went into victory formation and kneeled down for wins over Akron, UMass, and Miami.
*Defensively, Bowling Green ranks first in the country, allowing just 14 scores in 25 red zone trips. Of the 11 stops, four have come by virtue of missed field goals, three by recovered fumbles and four by fourth-down stops.
*UMass, Miami, and EMU did not reach the red zone when the Falcons played them.
FIRST TIME TO PAYDIRT
*In the first 10 games of the season, Bowling Green scored 43 touchdowns and 31 of them came from players who had not scored prior to the start of 2013.
*While the Falcons are viewed as a verteran team, redshirt juniors Jared Cohen and Heath Jackson, junior Chris Pohlman, redshirt sophomores Chris Gallon, Ryan Burbrink, Travis Greene, Andre Givens and Matt Johnson, and true freshmen William Houston and Ronnie Moore have all scored offensive touchdowns this year.
*Burbrink and junior Paul Senn have added special teams touchdowns.
MAC LEADERS
*BGSU leads the MAC in 11 different team statistical categories.
*The Falcons lead the MAC in scoring defense, total defense, rushing defense, passing defense, pass defense efficiency, punt return average, first down defense, third down offense, time of possession, and red zone defense.
*BGSU ranks first in the nation in pass defense and red zone defense.
*The Falcons also rank in the FBS top 10 for scoring defense, total defense, punt return average, first down defense, fourth down defense, and time of possession.
HOME SWEET HOME
*The 2013 season marked the first time that Bowling Green has won at least five home games since 2004, when they went 5-0.
*BGSU completed its first three-game homestand since 2004 earlier this year, matching that season's 3-0 mark during the stretch.
*Since 1956 -- the first year with Doyt Perry as head coach -- BGSU has played 15 three-game homestands and a four-game homestand in 1960 (going 3-1).
*The Falcons went 3-0 in seven of the 15 homestands, 2-0-1 in another, 2-1 three times and 1-2 in the other four.
THE SIGNAL CALLER
*Redshirt sophomore Matt Johnson was inserted into the season-opener against Tulsa at quarterback to start the Falcons' third possession of the game and guided the Falcons to the 34-7 victory.
*Since the time he was inserted into the starting lineup, he has earned three MAC East Offensive Player of the Week awards (weeks two, four and seven).
*Johnson got the first start of his career against Kent State, going 19-for-25 for 357 yards and two touchdown passes, earning MAC East Offensive Player of the Week honors. He was one of eight Manning Award Stars of the Week.
*In the win over Murray State, Johnson was 19-of-22 passing. His .864 completion percentage was the fifth-best single-game percentage in BGSU history. He again earned MAC East Offensive Player of the Week honors.
*In the win over EMU, Johnson went over 2,500 yards on the season. He is currently just outside the top 10 all-time for a single season, with 2,572 yards.
HOUSTON, THEY'VE GOT A PROBLEM
*Walk-on freshman William Houston made a splash in his first collegiate game, scoring three times from just a yard out against Tulsa.
*For his efforts, Houston was named MAC Offensive Player of the Week.
*Houston entered Saturday's game against EMU with 10 touchdowns and 79 yards on the season. In that game, he rushed for 84 yards and a touchdown. The TD came from 44 yards out. In his previous 10 touchdown rushes, he had gained a combined 12 yards.
WE WANT MOORE
*True freshman Ronnie Moore has added a facet to the offense missing in 2012 -- explosive speed and play-making ability.
*Moore has been responsible for eight plays of 30 or more yards this season, the most on the team.
*The native of Sanford, Fla. currently leads the team with six touchdown receptions. He became the first Falcon since Sept. 10, 2011 to catch three TDs in a game.
*His performance at Eastern Michigan earned him MAC Offensive Player of the Week. He had seven catches, 161 yards, and three TDs, while also rushing the ball two times.
*Moore has scored touchdowns this year from 74, 51, and 34 yards out, all of those coming on passes which he used his speed to beat the defense to the end zone.
TATE IS GREAT
*Tyler Tate has been consistent in 2013, something the Falcons have been missing from their kicking the past few years.
*He is 13-of-16 this season on field goals, and 48-of-49 on PAT attempts.
*In the 58-7 win against Eastern Michigan, Tate recorded a career-high 16 points while converting all 10 of his kicks. His three field goals were a career-high, while his seven PATs matched his career high from the previous week.
PACING
*Through 11 games, several players are on pace to etch their names in the BGSU single-season record book. Among the most notable are:
*Traivs Greene currently sits in third all-time for a single season with 1,293 rushing yards. He is on pace for 1,410 yards, which would leave him just 34 yards shy of the all-time single-season rushing record set by Fred Durig in 1971.
*Greene is also on pace for 1,542 all-purpose yards, which would put him fourth all-time. He is also averaging 6.3 yards per carry, which would be fifth-best all-time for a single season.
*Matt Johnson is completing passes at a 65.1 percent clip, which would be the fourth best time for a single season.
*The redshirt sophomore quarterback is averaging 13.9 yards per completion, which would be seventh best in school history for a single season.
ON T.O.P. OF THEIR GAME
*BGSU leads the MAC in time of possession, possessing the ball for 34:14 per game. That mark puts the Falcons third in FBS football.
*Bowling Green is 8-1 this season when they win the time of possession battle, and 0-2 when they lose it.
SPECIAL TEAMS DOMINANCE
*BGSU's special teams have provided key sparks for the Falcons all season long.
*BGSU kicker Tyler Tate is 13-of-16 on field goal attempts and 48-of-49 on extra points.
*Ryan Burbrink had a 67-yard punt return for a touchdown against Tulsa.
*Cameron Truss stuffed a fake punt on fourth-and-1 against Tulsa.
*BGSU recovered a muffed punt in the fourth quarter against Tulsa.
*In his only two punt attempts at Mississippi State, Schmiedebusch recorded 48 and 49-yarders. More impressively, one was downed at the one-yard line and the other, following a penalty, forced MSU to start at its own six.
*In the contest against Ohio, Bowling Green stuffed another fake punt attempt early in the contest to swing the momentum in favor of the Falcons.
*The Falcon kicking game has been consistent for the majority of the 2013 season. Tyler Tate has made seven PATs in back-to-back games.
*Paul Senn blocked a punt against Indiana and returned the ball for a 56-yard touchdown, earning the No. 1 play on SportsCenter's Top 10 for Saturday, Sept. 14.
FIRST TIME STARTERS
*Three Falcons earned their first career starts against Tulsa -- all on the offensive side of the ball. Offensive tackles Logan Dietz and Jacob Bennett, along with running back Travis Greene, had their names in the starting lineup for the first time.
*Quarterback Matt Johnson picked up his first career start in the win over Kent State.
*Ronnie Moore and Brian Sutton picked up their first career starts at Indiana.
*Justin Ford posted his first career start against Murray State.
*Two more players got their first career starts against Mississippi State -- Chris Pohlman and William Houston.
*Redshirt junior Jared Cohen picked up his first career start against Toledo.
*Heath Jackson started at receiver against Miami, his first career start.
GETTING THEIR CAREERS STARTED
*In the season opener, 16 Falcons stepped on the field wearing the Bowling Green uniform for the first time in their collegiate careers.
*Four true freshmen saw action including Fred Coppet, Isaiah Gourdine, William Houston and Ronnie Moore.
*Nine of the first timers were redshirt freshmen in JJ Beggan, Jacob Bennett, Terrance Bush, Scott Davis, Logan Dietz, Greg Hohenstein, James Knapke, Izaah Lunsford and Ben Steward.
*Others who saw action for the first time were redshirt junior Jared Cohen (junior college transfer), redshirt sophomore Diontre Delk and junior Paul Senn (junior college transfer).
*Alphonso Mack and Jahlil-Nashid Croley both saw their first collegiate action in the win over Murray State.
*Against Ohio, Zac Bartman and Patrick Brown saw their first career action. Brown, celebrating Senior Day, kneeled down the final snap of the game.
IMPENETRABLE DEFENSE DOMINATES IN ROUT OF EMU
*Bowling Green defeated Eastern Michigan 58-7 in Ypsilanti on Saturday. After falling behind 7-3, BGSU reeled off 55 straight for the win.
*It was the third consecutive game that the Bowling Green defense has not allowed a touchdown.
*The Falcon defense allowed just four passing yards and 65 total yards in the rout of EMU. Both were the fewest allowed in the Dave Clawson era.
*BGSU also ran for 296 yards against the Eagles, the best in the five years under Dave Clawson.
*It was the third consecutive win over EMU, and third straight win overall for the Falcons.
IT ALL COMES DOWN TO THIS
Friday's game at Ralph Wilson Stadium will serve as a de facto MAC East Division championship game. The winner of the game will win the MAC East Division and play in the MAC Championship game against Northern Illinois on Friday, December 6, at Ford Field in Detroit.
THE CHIEF OF THE O-LINE
*David "Chief" Kekuewa spent two years at Arizona Western Junior College before coming to Bowling Green just prior to the 2012 season. Kekuewa has started every game over the past two seasons at center.
*Chief's last name comes from Keli'ikuewa (which is also his middle name) and means the wandering chief. In old Hawaii, Kekuewa's family were chiefs of Honaunau, the city of refuge, on the island of Hawaii. Once foreigners went to the islands and especially after the Great Mahele chiefs in the Hawaiian Kingdom lost land and power, his family became wanderers, hence the wandering chiefs.
THE GREENE LIGHT
*Redshirt sophomore Travis Greene was named the starting running back for 2013, filling a hole left with the departure of former high school teammate Anthon Samuel.
*Greene converted from wide receiver to running back during the spring and continued to climb the depth chart until finally being moved to the top of the two-deep after the team's second fall scrimmage.
*Greene currently has 1,293 yards and nine touchdowns on the year. He is just 121 yards shy of second all-time for a single season in school history, and 151 shy of first.
ALL-MAC RETURNERS
*BGSU returns seven players who were named All-MAC a year ago. Gabe Martin and BooBoo Gates were first team all-league honorees, while punter Brian Schmiedebusch made the second team. Alex Bayer, Dominic Flewellyn, Ted Ouellet and Cameron Truss were named to the third team.
*In all, the Falcons had 10 All-MAC players a year ago, the most for the team since 2004.
PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
*BGSU has earned 11 Mid-American Conference East Division Player of the Week honors through the first 11 games of the season.
*Travis Greene was named MAC East Offensive Player of the Week after rushing for 142 yards and adding 71 more yards receiving in a 31-14 win over Akron. Greene also had a rushing touchdown and a receiving score.
*Matt Johnson earned three MAC East Offensive Player of the Week awards for his efforts against Kent State, Murray State and Mississippi State.
*Paul Senn earned MAC East Special Teams Player of the Week after blocking a punt and returning it for a touchdown against Indiana. He also recovered a fumble on a kick-off after the Falcons took a 10-7 lead in the second quarter.
*William Houston was named MAC East Offensive Player of the Week after scoring three touchdowns in his first collegiate game against Tulsa.
*Ryan Burbrink was named MAC East Special Teams Player of the Week after a 67-yard punt return for a touchdown against Tulsa.
*Tyler Tate was named MAC East Special Teams Player of the Week after his performance at Miami which he converted all six PATs and made a field goal.
*Brian Schmiedebusch was named MAC Special Teams Player of the Week for his efforts against Ohio, when he punted four times and held Ohio to -4 yards on returns.
*Ronnie Moore was named MAC East Offensive Player of the Week this past week against EMU, when he had career-highs in catches (7), yards (161), and touchdowns (3). He was the first Falcon since Sept. 10, 2011 with three receiving touchdowns in a single game.
ALL ALONE
Senior BooBoo Gates has two kick returns for touchdowns, one punt return for a score, two interception returns for TD, and a fumble recovery returned for a TD in his career. Gates is the first Falcon in school history to own touchdown returns via kick, punt, interception, and fumble returns.
VERY SPECIAL TEAMS
Since head coach Dave Clawson arrived at Bowling Green, he and assistant coach Adam Scheier have found a way to get the most out of the BGSU special teams. In five years, Scheier's special teams have:
*three kick returns for touchdowns.
*four punt returns for scores.
*blocked 15 kicks.
*returned a blocked punt for a touchdown.
*converted on two fake punts.
*produced two All-MAC returners (BooBoo Gates and Eugene Cooper).
*produced two All-MAC punters (Brian Wright and Brian Schmiedebusch twice).
HAIL TO THE CHIEF
David "Chief" Kekuewa was named to the Rimington Fall Watch List, an award given annually to the top center in college football. Kekuewa started all 13 games at center a year ago and was part of a unit that helped produce more than 150 rushing yards per game.
WATSON TO THE HOUSE
Sophomore Will Watson recovered a fumble in Saturday's game, and returned it to the house for his first career touchdown. It was the Falcons' second defensive score of the season, the other one coming via a BooBoo Gates fumble recovery and return for the touchdown.
GOURDINE GETS ON THE BOARD
True freshman Isaiah Gourdine recorded his first career interception in Saturday's game at EMU. It was the fourth consecutive game that Gourdine has appeared in, and eighth straight.
LUNSFORD MAKES MOST OF PLAYING TIME
After redshirting last season, Izaah Lunsford has seen action in just five games so far this season. On Saturday, he got an opportunity for extended playing time, and made the most of it. He was second on the team with four tackles in the game, three of them for a loss. He forced a fumble on a strip-sack, which was returned for a touchdown.
SCHILZ SURPASSES 8,000 YARDS
Quarterback Matt Schilz surpassed 8,000 career passing yards against Ohio with a 24-yard touchdown pass to Ronnie Moore. He is the third QB in school history to reach that milestone.
PRESEASON PREDICTIONS
Almost every preseason poll in the country has picked the BGSU football team to finish first or second in the MAC East, splitting most of the votes with Ohio. The Falcons were picked first by Athlon, The Sporting News and Phil Steele. The MAC media and USA Today picked Bowling Green to finish second in their respective preseason polls.
FALCONS WITH MAC'S BEST SCORING MARGIN
Following the win at Eastern Michigan, Bowling Green now has the MAC's best scoring margin at +21.0 points per game. The Falcons have scored 389 points while allowing just 158 this season. The Falcons are scoring over 71-percent of points in every one of their games. In comparison, 11-0 and MAC West champion Northern Illinois has a scoring margin of +19.3. They have scored 481 points while allowing 269 this season. The Huskies are scoring just 64-percent of points in their games.
ON THE TUBE
BGSU has had nine games aired on the ESPN Family of Networks. Games against Tulsa and Indiana were televised on ESPNU and the Kent State game was aired on ESPN Regional. The Murray State, Akron and UMass games were broadcast on ESPN3 as was the game against Toledo. The Nov. 5 contest at Miami was an ESPNU telecast. The game Nov. 12 vs. Ohio was on ESPN3, as was the game at EMU. This week's game at Buffalo will also be televised on ESPNU. On top of that, the game at Mississippi State was televised on Fox Sports Net. Any home game that is not selected for ESPN coverage can be seen locally on BCSN and webstreamed live on BGSUFalcons.com.
THE NFL DRAFT
*BGSU alumnus Chris Jones joined a select fraternity in April when the defensive tackle was picked in the sixth round of the 2013 NFL Draft by the Houston Texans. Jones was the first Falcon drafted since Kory Lichtensteiger in 2007. Jones, the MAC Defensive Player of the Year, was joined in NFL camp by classmate Jordan Roussos, who was signed by the Seattle Seahawks as an undrafted free agent.
*Jones has already made his way around the NFL but may have found a home in New England. After being released by Houston, signed and released by Tampa Bay, the defensive tackle was picked up by the Patriots and is now starting. He had 10 tackles, 3.0 tackles for loss and two sacks in the Patriots' game against the New York Jets earlier this season.
MORE NFL RUNDOWN
*BGSU alumnus Kory Lichtensteiger has started all 11 games at left guard for the Washington Redskins this year after starting all 16 games at the position a year ago.
*Shaun Suisham has been the Pittsburgh Steelers' kicker since 2010 and has not missed a PAT attempt in his time with the Steelers.
