Falcons Set To Open MAC Play Against Ball State And Miami

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- The Bowling Green State University softball team will open Mid-American Conference play this weekend, starting with a doubleheader against Ball State on Friday, March 29. The Falcons, who carry a 12-8 overall record, went 0-3 against the Cardinals last season. Bowling Green lost a two-game set against Ball State on the road during the regular season, before falling to the Cardinals in the MAC Tournament. Bowling Green leads the all-time series with a record of 49-36, including a record of 7-9 under head coach Shannon Salsburg.
After Ball State the Falcons will take on Miami in a two-game set, playing one game Saturday and one game on Sunday. The Falcons split with the RedHawks last season, going 1-1 in a doubleheader at Miami. Bowling Green is 51-43 in the all-time series against Miami, with a record of 5-8 under coach Salsburg.
Earlier This Week
The Bowling Green State University softball team lost to Michigan Wednesday evening, falling to the Wolverines by a score of 9-1 to push their overall record to 12-8. Senior Paige Berger collected one of the Falcons' three hits, going 1-for-2 with a run scored. Sophomore Chloe Giordano and senior Adrienne Dick picked up the other two Bowling Green hits, going 1-for-2 and 1-for-1, respectively. Sophomore Paris Imholz (9-2) was credited with the loss after giving up three earned runs on six hits in the first 1.2 innings. Fellow sophomore Jamie Kertes also saw action, giving up one earned run on four hits in 2.1 innings of work.
Three MAC POW Wins
The Mid-American Conference announced Monday afternoon that sophomore Paris Imholz was once again named the MAC East Pitcher Of The Week. Imholz recorded two wins this past weekend against Wright State, pushing the Falcons' winning streak to four games. Imholz held the Raiders scoreless in two appearances over a two-game span, striking out five and carrying a 0.00 ERA over 8.0 innings of play. Imholz has won the honor three weeks in a row, giving her four MAC East Pitcher Of The Week Awards over her collegiate career.
Imholz has earned an overall record of 9-2 this season, appearing in 19 games with nine starts. She leads the Falcons with 78.0 innings pitched this season, allowing just 17 earned runs over that span for a 1.53 ERA. Imholz has helped Bowling Green to a 12-8 overall record this season, giving the Falcons a .600 winning percentage, tied (Ohio) for the best in the MAC.
Miami Last Season
Bowling Green split with Miami in the final week of the reular season in 2012, losing the first game 3-2, before defeating the RedHawks 3-1 in the second contest. Andrea Arney, Paige Berger and Hannah Fulk all earned two hits in the first game, with Fulk earning the lone Falcon RBI with a solo home run. Jamie Kertes pitched the first two innings of game one, allowing three earned runs on six hits for the loss. Paris Imholz pitched the final four innings, allowing zero runs on four hits.
The Falcons rebounded in the second game, earning a 3-1 victory over Miami in the second half of the doubleheader. Berger led the Falcons in hits, going 3-for-4 with a double, while Fulk hit her second home run of the afternoon in a 2-for-3 effort in game two. Imholz earned the complete game win, striking out one and allowing just one earned run in seven innings of work.
Ball State Last Season
Bowling Green lost to Ball State in their first meeting last season, falling to the Cardinals by a score of 6-0. Berger led the Falcons offensively, going 2-for-3 in the game. Katie Yoho collected the other Bowling Green hit, going 1-for-3 on the afternoon. Jamie Kertes picked up the loss, allowing two earned runs and eight hits in 3.2 innings of work. Paris Imholz finished the game, allowing three hits and two earned runs on the final 2.1 innings of play.
The Falcons dropped their final contest of the regular season in game two against the Cardinals, falling to Ball State, 8-5. Hannah Fulk had a tremendous day at the plate, going 3-for-4 including a three run home in the fifth inning to break the Bowling Green single-season home run record. Paige Berger, the previous record holder, went 1-for-3 with a solo home run. Imholz picked up the loss, giving up six hits and four earned runs in five innings of work. Kertes pitched an inning of relief in the middle of the contest, also allowing six hits and four earned runs.
Bowling Green lost to Ball State in their final meeting, falling to the Cardinals by a score of 3-2. The loss eliminated Bowling Green from the MAC Tournament, ending the Falcons' season. Fulk once again led the Falcons offensively, earning the only hit for Bowling Green in a 1-for-3 effort on the day. Fulk made the most of it, hitting a two run shot to left field for her record setting 15th homer of the season. Kertes was credited with the loss, giving up two earned runs and striking out four in a complete 7.0 inning effort.
The Last Time Home
The Falcons dropped two games to Miami in their last meeting in Bowling Green, falling 1-0 and 5-1 in a doubleheader on April 29, 2011. The Falcons are currently on a four-game losing streak to Miami at Meserve Field, having not beaten the RedHawks in Bowling Green since April 13, 2007, a 4-3 victory. Bowling Green is currently on a two-game winning streak against Ball State at Meserve Field, sweeping the Cardinals, 7-6 and 5-4, in April of 2011. Ball State's last win in BG came back in 2009, a 10-2 victory on April 10.
