Carrillo Earns NCAA Championship Invite
March 06, 2013 | Women's Swimming & Diving
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - After breaking school records in the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke at the Mid-American Conference Championships, freshman Daniela Carrillo has earned an invitation to compete at the 2013 NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships, March 21-23, in Indianapolis, Ind.
Carrillo is the first BGSU swimmer to advance to NCAA Championships since Cheryl Patteson competed in 1996. Carrillo will swim the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke, after notching second-place finishes in both events at the MAC Championships. Her prelims swim of 2:11.20 in the 200 breaststroke was the fastest time of the meet.
"It's been a while since Bowling Green had someone at NCAAs, so we're very excited," said head coach Petra Martin. "We can't wait to get over there and get that experience."
Carrillo has been a key asset to the Falcons all year, but came on particularly strong at the end of the season. At MAC Championships, she shaved seven seconds off her best time in the 200-yard breaststroke and nearly three seconds off her best in the 100-yard breaststroke.
An NCAA Championship berth caps off a fantastic year for BGSU swimming, which celebrated its best MAC Championship finish (third) since 2004. In addition to the team's success, Alexa Harris became Bowling Green's first individual champion since 2009, winning the 200-yard backstroke, while Martin was named MAC Coach of the Year for her efforts.
