Mesa, Ariz. - Bowling Green State University swim team member Daniela Carrillo competed at the 2013 Arena Grand Prix at Mesa over the weekend, finishing 12th in the 100 meter breaststroke final.
Carrillo swam a time of 1:12.57 in the B final, an improvement on her 1:13.24 swim in prelims. Olympic Gold Medalist Breeja Larson finished first overall. Carrillo was also entered in the 200 meter breaststroke, but was disqualified in her first race.
"We look at this Grand Prix sort of as a training meet," said head coach Petra Martin. "Her Mexican nationals are coming up in two weeks and she's going to be trying to make the national team. Right now, she's moving in the right direction and swimming well."
A freshman, Carrillo came to the Falcons from Hermasillo, Mexico, making an immediate impact in the breaststroke events. Last month, she became the first BGSU swimmer to advance to the NCAA Championships since 1996. She also notched two second-place finishes at the Mid-American Conference Championships in the 100- and 200 yard breaststroke.
The competition at Mesa is the fourth stop in the Arena Grand Prix Series, which concludes in Santa Clara, Calif., May 30-June 2.
