Leading Off: The Bowling Green State University baseball team will travel to Notre Dame on Wednesday night. The Falcons enter the game on a season-high four-game winning streak, coming off a weekend sweep at Toledo.
Scouting The Fighting Irish: Notre Dame comes in at 19-14, having lost five straight games before a Tuesday game at Michigan. Mik Aoki is the head coach of the Fighting Irish, currently in his third season at Notre Dame. UND has a batting average of .259 and an ERA of 3.53.
The Three Phases: During the four-game winning streak, the Falcons have been solid in all three phases of the game. During the past week, BGSU hit .320 as a team, had an ERA of 2.25, and a fielding percentage of .988.
Glanzman Grabs Attention: Freshman third baseman Nick Glanzman grabbed the attention of the MAC this weekend, as he batted .500 (6-12) with seven runs scored, four RBI, two doubles, and an on-base percentage of .600. For his efforts, Glanzman was named MAC East Player of the Week.
Kubuski Heating Up: After leading the team in batting average in 2012, Andrew Kubuski got off to a slow start this season. Kubuski began to heat up with the Florida weather during the Spring Break trip, as he has now reached base in 19 consecutive contests since a March 6 game at nationally-ranked Florida Gulf Coast.
Apthorpe Dealing: Captain Cody Apthorpe has been locked in during his last three outings, currently riding a 22.2 innings streak without allowing an earned run.
Offense Explodes In Rivalry: On Saturday afternoon, the BGSU offense exploded to the tune of a 14-1 win. In that game, on top of setting a season-high for runs scored, they also set the season-standard for hits with 18.
Pitching Dominates MAC's Best Offense: Coming into the weekend at just 3-6 in the Mid-American Conference, facing the league's best offensive team seemed like a tough task. However, the BGSU pitching staff was up to that task, holding Toledo to four runs over 27 innings, and a batting average of just .204.
Countdown To 600: In his 23rd season as the head coach at Bowling Green State University, Danny Schmitz has a career record of 599-569-5. Schmitz, who is the second winningest active coach in the Mid-American Conference (behind Ball State's Rich Maloney), has won a school-record 36 games on two different occasions. His teams have qualified for the MAC tournament 11 times. He has been named MAC Coach of the Year on three different occasions (1994, 1995, 2009). Below are Schmitz's career milestone victories:
1st win: March 9, 1991 at Eastern Kentucky (6-3)
100th win: April 26, 1995 at Ball State (3-1)
200th win: March 6, 1999 vs. Pittsburgh (9-8 in Homestead, Fla.)
250th win: April 15, 2000 vs. Marshall (8-4)
300th win: February 17, 2002 at Tennessee (15-11)
