Four Swimmers Earn Academic All-MAC
April 16, 2013 | Women's Swimming & Diving
Cleveland, Ohio - The Mid-American Conference announced the 2013 Women's Swimming and Diving Academic All-MAC Team today, as voted by the faculty athletic representatives from the member MAC institutions.
The 25-member team featured four Bowling Green swimmers: seniors Jen Beatty and Alexa Harris, junior Jöelle Scheps and sophomore Stephanie Boyle. Four additional Falcons - Emily Bennet, Allie Reynolds, Haley Roberts and Carmen Young - received an Honorable Mention.
Beatty earns the honor for the third consecutive year, after being named to the Capital One Academic All-American At-Large Team in 2012. She finishes her career with a perfect 4.0 grade-point average in physical education teacher education.
Scheps also boasts a 4.0 in individualized businesses after transferring to BGSU from the Netherlands. Scheps made an immediate impact for the Falcons, swimming a school-record time in the 200 freestyle at MAC Championships. She also contributed to the team's school-record breaking 400 freestyle relay, which placed fifth at MAC Championships.
Harris, who won a MAC title in the 200 backstroke, recorded a 3.398 in early childhood education to earn the award. Bowling Green's first MAC champion since 2009, Harris leads all swimmers, past and present, with five program records.
Boyle also made the list, due in part to a 3.432 GPA as an intervention specialist major. She came on strong in the second half of the year, earning top-five finishes at the MAC Championships in the 200 breaststroke and 400 IM.
The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award. Outstanding academic and athletic accomplishments for the current season only are considered.
