Falcons Hit The Road For Final Weekend Of Regular Season

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Bowling Green State University softball team hits the road for the final stretch of the regular season this weekend, starting with a doubleheader against Western Michigan on Friday May 3. The Falcons close out the regular season with a single games against Northern Illinois on Saturday and Sunday. Bowling Green trails the all-time series with Western Michigan, with the Broncos holding a 31-45 advantage. The Falcons do hold a 7-6 overall record against WMU under head Coach Shannon Salsburg. Bowling Green holds a 21-19 advantage in the all-time series with Northern Illinois, including a record of 6-6 under coach Salsburg.
Last Season – Northern Illinois
Bowling Green split their doubleheader with Northern Illinois last season, falling by a score of 4-3 in game one, before punishing the Huskies, 15-2, in the second contest. The Falcons set several school records in game two, including home runs in a game (6) and home runs in an inning (4). Both numbers also stand as Mid-American Conference records.
Katie Yoho led the Falcons offensively in the first contest, going 1-for-4 with a home run and two RBI. Senior Rachel Proehl led the Falcons in hits, going 3-for-4 with a run scored in the game. Jamie Kertes started the contest, recording four strikeouts and giving up three earned runs in 5.0 innings. Paris Imholz recorded 2.0 innings in relief, allowing two hits and the game-winning run to earn the loss.
With their then six-game winning streak snapped in game one, the Falcons responded with a season-high 15-run outburst in the second contest. Several Falcons homered in the game, breaking Bowling Green and Mid-American Conference records in the process.
Hannah Fulk went 2-for-3 with two home runs and four RBI, setting career highs in both categories. Paige Berger went 2-for-3, including a home run and a double, recording three RBI in the process. Andrea Arney also went 2-for-3, snapping a 14-game home run drought with her tenth blast of the year. Yoho and Erika Stratton also homered in the contest, culminating in a six home run effort from Bowling Green in the second game of the doubleheader.
Last Season – Western Michigan
The Falcons swept Western Michigan last season, defeating the Broncos, 4-0, in game one, before completing the sweep with a 2-1 win in the second contest. The sweep was a perfect home send off for Falcon seniors Melissa West and Rachel Proehl, who were honored before the game for Senior Day.
Proehl and Paige Berger led Bowling Green in hits in the first contest, each going 2-for-4. Berger and Hannah Fulk both homered in the contest, accounting for three of the Falcons' four RBI. Jamie Kertes picked up the win, tying a career high with nine strikeouts in 5.0 innings of play.
The Orange and Brown finished the sweep of Western Michigan with a 2-1 win in game two. Fink earned the only two RBI for Bowling Green in game two, going 1-for-2 in the contest. Imholz picked up the win, allowing just four hits and one run in 4.1 innings of play. Kertes was perfect in relief, holding the Broncos hitless in the final 2.2 innings of play for the save.
Weekly Review
Bowling Green split its doubleheader with IPFW Tuesday afternoon, falling to the Mastodons by a score of 6-4 in game one before rebounding with a 7-1 win in game two.
In game one, freshman Marisa Shook led the Falcons with a career-best four RBI thanks to a 2-for-3 performance. One of Shook's hits included a two-run home run, her third of the season. Senior Paige Berger also went 2-for-3 in the contest, collecting two singles with two runs scored. Sophomore Jamie Kertes was credited with the loss after giving up six runs (one earned), while striking out five in 6.1 innings of play.
The Orange and Brown came back with a vengeance in game two, dominating the Mastodons by a 7-1 margin. Berger led the Falcons with two hits, going 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBI. Sophomore Paris Imholz picked up the complete-game victory after allowing just one run and four hits, while also earning four strikeouts.
The Falcons lost to the University of Toledo Saturday afternoon, falling to the Rockets by a score of 3-1 at Meserve Field.
Junior Erika Stratton led the Falcons with two hits on the day, going 2-for-4 with two singles. Sophomore Chloe Giordano collected the lone Bowling Green RBI, going 1-for-3 with a single. Sophomore Jamie Kertes (9-12) was credited with the loss, giving up three earned runs while recording four strikeouts. Sophomore Paris Imholz also saw action, allowing just two hits in the final 1.1 innings if play.
Bowling Green defeated the University of Toledo Sunday afternoon, shutting out the Rockets by a score of 1-0 on Senior Day at Meserve Field. The win improved the Falcons' overall record to 25-19, with a record of 8-10 in the Mid-American Conference. The loss pushes Toledo's overall record to 15-31, including a record of 7-11 in conference play.
Senior Paige Berger led the Falcons with two hits, going 2-for-3 with an RBI. Freshman Braiden Dillow secured the third Falcon hit, going 1-for-1 with a single in a pinch hitting situation. Sophomore Paris Imholz (16-6) picked up the complete game victory, allowing just four hits and striking out two in the shut out.
Pitcher Of The Week
Sophomore Paris Imholz was perfect this past week, going 2-0 in the circle with a 0.00 ERA. Imholz was responsible for both of the Falcons' wins, holding opponents to just 10 hits in 16.0 innings pitched. Both of Imholz's victories were complete games, most recently holding rival Toledo scoreless in a 1-0 Bowling Green victory. Imholz also struck out six batters while improving her overall record to 16-6, just one win shy of her career high. Imholz has won the MAC East Pitcher Of The Week award four times this season, giving her five over the course of her career.
Player Of The Week Nominee
For the second consecutive week senior Paige Berger hit over .500, leading the Falcons with a .538 batting average. Berger also doubled up the next closest Falcon in hits (7) and runs (4), while her .759 slugging percentage and 10 total bases also led the Orange and Brown. Berger's week was highlighted by a four-RBI game against IPFW, thanks in large part to a three-run home run.
