Akron, Ohio – Andrea Alt set a personal best in the 3000 steeplechase and Jeanette Pettigrew qualified for the finals in the 100 with a non-wind aided personal best on day two of the Mid-American Conference Track and Field Championships Friday.
Alt ran the 3000 steeplechase in 10:48.25, more than seven seconds faster than her previous best. The freshman placed seventh to earn two points for the Falcons. It marked the best BGSU finish in the event at the MAC Championships since Barbara Powers placed sixth in 2010.
Pettigrew, who had not raced in nearly a month, exploded out of the gates in the 100 to run a season-best 11.75 seconds. The only better result of her career was a wind-aided 11.49 at the 2011 MAC Championships, when she finished third. Pettigrew qualified for the finals with the fifth-best time in the prelims.
Although Alt and Pettigrew were the only Falcons to score points or qualify for a final, the Falcons posted numerous PRs on the day. Demetra Taylor placed 10th in the 100 hurdles with a career-best time of 14.20. Allison Weimer, Brittany Sinclair and Taylor Rambo all set PRs in the 400. Weimer also set a career-best in the 200 while Krystin Reiser completed the heptathlon in 11th place with a career-best 4,162 points.
With 12 team points, BGSU is tied for eighth place at the MAC Championships. After scoring just one point a year ago, the Falcons are currently the only team that has already outscored its team total from a year ago.
Bowling Green will compete in six more events on the final day of the MAC Championships Saturday, beginning with the discus at 12:05 pm, featuring Kayla Velasquez. The Falcons will get points from Pettigrew in the 100 finals and have an opportunity to add more in the 4x400 relay, where the team is seeded third. The 4x100 relay team is seeded ninth and Jasmine Redman is the No. 10 seed in the 5000, both of which will be in action Saturday.
