Falcons Suffer First Loss of MAC Tournament to CMU, 8-0

AKRON, Ohio -- The Bowling Green State University softball team lost to Central Michigan University Wednesday evening, falling to the Chippewas by a score of 8-0 in the second round of the Mid-American Conference Tournament. The Falcons finished the day with a 1-1 mark, putting Bowling Green's overall record at 27-23. The Falcons, who are now one loss away from elimination, will play the University of Toledo on Thursday, May 9. The first pitch is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
Senior Paige Berger and junior Erika Stratton each recorded one of the Falcons' two hits in the contest, both going 1-for-2 on the day. Sophomore Paris Imholz (16-8) started the tilt, giving up four hits and four earned runs in the loss. Fellow sophomore Jamie Kertes also saw action, allowing seven hits and one earned run in 3.1 innings of play.
Central Michigan opened the game on fire, crossing home plate four times on four hits with one Bowling Green error to jump out to an early 4-0 lead. The Chippewas added another run on two hits in the second, increasing Central Michigan's lead to 5-0.
CMU finished off Bowling Green with another offensive surge in the bottom of the fourth, scoring three more runs on four hits with two Falcon errors to take a commanding 8-0 lead. Bowling Green was unable to score in the top of the fifth, giving Central Michigan the mercy-rule victory.
The Falcons' first loss of the double elimination tournament sends them into the one-loss bracket, where they will meet the University of Toledo. Bowling Green was 1-1 against the Rockets this season at Meserve Field, falling, 3-1, in their first meeting before rebounding with a 1-0 victory. The Falcons defeated Toledo in the MAC Tournament last season, dropping the Rockets by a score 5-0.
