Kaser Named Assistant Tennis Coach
August 26, 2013 | Women's Tennis
"Jim brings a wealth of playing and coaching experience to the BG tennis team," said Dean. "His coaching and practice drills will be invaluable along with his contagious enthusiasm. We are all pumped to begin our quest, as we look to build on last year's success and bring home a MAC tennis title to BGSU."
Kaser brings a vast amount of tennis teaching and coaching experience to the Falcon program. He was the head boys and girls tennis coach at Maumee Valley Country Day School in Toledo, coaching the girls team for 14 seasons and the boys for 13.
Kaser also served as a teaching professional at a veritable plethora of tennis facilities in the Toledo area. For the past five years, Kaser has been the teaching professional at the Perrysburg Tennis Center, the indoor home of the Falcons. Previously, he was the head professional at Inverness Club for 17 years and the Toledo Tennis Club for eight years. Kaser also spent time as an assistant professional at Belmont Country Club, Shadow Valley, Laurel Hill, Sylvania Country Club and the Courts of Sylvania.
"Coaching at the Division-I college level is something I have wanted to do for a while," said Kaser. "I am really excited to be a part of and help out with the Falcon program."
An accomplished tennis player himself, Kaser earned four varsity letters at the University of Toledo (1982-86). He has won a pair of national doubles titles, and has won six Toledo city men's doubles titles and two Toledo city mixed doubles championships.
Cindy Yonker, who is entering her fifth season on the BGSU tennis coaching staff, will serve as a volunteer assistant coach in 2013-14. Yonker, a standout player on Dean's team in the mid-1990s, was the top assistant during the last four seasons, and is transitioning into the volunteer assistant role as she enters graduate school in '13-14.
The Falcons are coming off arguably the best season in program history in 2012-13. Dean's team had an overall record of 17-5, setting a school record for wins. BGSU tied for second in the MAC's final regular-season standings, and the Falcons earned the number-two seed for the MAC Championships. Both the regular-season finish and the tourney seed were the highest in BG annals, and the Falcons set another program milestone by advancing to the league tournament's championship match for the first time ever, before dropping a narrow 4-3 decision to Miami.
Dean and her staff welcome back four student-athletes from that club in seniors Nikki Chiricosta and Emily Reuland, along with sophomores Katie Brozovich and Drew Fillis. That quartet will be joined by a trio of freshmen in Hannah Drayton, Harley Hutchison and Brittany Plaszewski. The 2013-14 season will begin on Friday, Sept. 20, as the Falcons host the two-day BGSU Invitational.
