Cross Country Opens Season on Friday at Eastern Michigan
August 27, 2013 | Men's Cross Country, Women's Cross Country
The Bowling Green State University cross country teams open the 2013 season on Friday, Aug. 30th in Brighton, Mich. at the EMU Triangular, hosted by Eastern Michigan University.
The meet takes place on the earliest permissible date of competition, and it is one of five regular season meets on the schedule before the Falcons host the 2013 Mid-American Conference Cross Country Championships on November 2nd.
The men's team enters this first meet with an equal mix of youth and experience, including four true freshmen and seven runners who return from last year's team.
Sophomore Tim Jurick is the only returning runner to have earned the team's top finish in a meet during the 2012 season. He was first among all Falcons at the Mel Brodt Invitational (16:46.50, 9th place) and at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional (35:05, 170th). He also placed 18th at the UB Stampede Invitational with an 8K personal-best time of 26:01.0.
Senior Jason Salyer returns for his senior season after redshirting last year. In 2011, he was fifth at the Toledo Opener and fourth at the Ball State Invitational. Salyer was also BGSU's top runner that season at the All-Ohio Championships, MAC Championships and NCAA Great Lakes Regional.
Other returning runners include Greg Black, who also redshirted in 2012, as well as Jeremy Richard and Perry Fraylick, each of whom had a personal-best 8K time at the Bradley Classic. Also returning are Tom Hipwell, whose best finish of 2012 was 17th at the Mel Brodt Invitational, and Joe van Bolderen. Van Bolderen placed 26th at the UB Stampede Invitational with a time of 26:34, which was a personal-best in an 8K race.
The women's team continues to be one of the youngest in the country. Of the entire roster, all but one runner is in her first or second year of eligibility. Only senior Brea Tinney, who redshirted in 2012, breaks that mold. Six runners who were active in 2012 return to this year's squad, along with several others who redshirted.
One returning athlete with great potential is redshirt sophomore Andrea Alt. In her first season, she earned two top-ten finishes and was the team's best runner at the MAC Championships. At that meet, she ran the 6K in 22:21 for a 23rd place finish.
Four freshmen made their official Falcon debuts at the 5K All-Ohio Championships, and each earned top-20 finishes. Emma Mirwaldt led the way in 10th place (19:11.43), while Becca Rae finished 11th. Maria Meredith's time of 19:28.96 earned 15th place, and Amanda Garlak was right behind Meredith in 17th. Also returning is Jasmine Redman, whose 18:12.4 mark in the 5K at the UB Stampede Invitational was a personal best and earned a 9th place result.
Aside from Brea Tinney, four runners will see their first career action after redshirting in 2012. That group includes Heather Baruxes, Kelsey Cogan, Lindsay Kaatz, and Mackenzie McMillin. The Falcons' 2013 squad also features four true freshmen.
Friday's meet will begin the third season at the helm for head coach Lou Snelling. After this weekend's event, the Falcons will have two weeks to prepare for the Mel Brodt Collegiate Opener, which will take place in Bowling Green, Ohio at 6:30pm on Friday, September 13th.
