Ypsilanti, Mich. – The Bowling Green men's and women's cross country teams each placed second at the Eastern Michigan Triangular Friday evening in the season opener for both squads. Both of the teams defeated rival Toledo, but fell short of the host school.
A year ago, the men's cross country team ran just one 5000 meter race but had only one runner finish in under 17 minutes. This year, the men's cross country team had four student-athletes break the 17-minute mark, paced by junior Greg Black, who ended fifth with a time of 16:17.6, nine seconds better than his previous collegiate best. Senior Jason Salyer was right behind in 16:20.1 and sophomore Tim Jurick placed 10th with a time of 16:29.2, also setting a personal best for the distance. Senior Joe van Bolderen was the third of the top four Falcons to set a personal best time, ending 11th in 16:48.1. The final Falcon to score was freshman Nathan Kuck, who was 15th at 17:04.3. Riley Kuess and Logan Pitcher were 16th and 17th respectively, while Jeremy Richard and Ben Shaffer ended 20th and 21st.
The BGSU women ran a partial team in the 5000 meter race, but the Falcons still placed four runners among the top nine finishers. Sophomore Emma Mirwaldt led the way with a fourth place finish in a personal-best time of 19:02.8. Redshirt freshman McKenzie McMillin was sixth in 19:09.9 and sophomores Maria Meredith and Rebecca Rae finished back-to-back in eighth and ninth. Meredith's time of 19:19.9 was a career best. Redshirt freshman Heather Baruxes was the team's fifth scorer, placing 13th overall.
"This was a solid start to the season for us," Head Coach Lou Snelling said. "You could see the potential for this group of athletes to put together some exciting performances later in the fall. In two weeks, we will see a more complete team with several other athletes opening up their season at the Mel Brodt."
Between the two teams, five of the seven runners who had competed in a collegiate 5000 meter race before the 2013 season set a new personal best time in the distance.
BGSU will host the Mel Brodt Collegiate Opener Sept. 13 at 6:30 pm.
