Cross Country Opens Home Slate Friday

Bowling Green, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University men's and women's cross country teams will host the annual Mel Brodt Collegiate Opener Friday evening beginning at 6:30 pm. Much of the race takes place on Forrest Creason Golf Course with the finish line just east of Doyt Perry Stadium.

RACE DETAILS
The 8,000-meter men's race is slated to begin at 6:30 pm and the 5,000-meter women's race will follow at approximately 7:10 pm. Live results will be available at www.finishtiming.com.

THE COMPETITORS
Bowling Green's men's team is expected to compete against teams from Toledo, Eastern Michigan, Youngstown State and Siena Heights, while the BGSU women will compete against Ball State, Miami (Ohio), Toledo, Eastern Michigan, Youngstown State and Siena Heights. Both defending MAC Champions will be competing in the Eastern Michigan men and the Toledo women. Youngstown State's women's team finished third in the Horizon League a year ago.

FIRST LOOK
The teams that are competing Friday will get a first look at the course on which the MAC Championships will be run Nov. 2. The men's race is expected to be identical to the MAC Championship while the women will run the final 5,000 meters of the 6,000-meter MAC Championship race.

FALCONS START STRONG
Both the BGSU men's and women's cross country teams opened the season strong, placing second out of three teams at the Eastern Michigan Triangular on Aug. 30. For the men, three of the four returners who ran set new personal bests on the 5,000 meter course with Greg Black leading the way with a time of 16:17.60. For the women, two of the three returners who raced set new personal bests in the 5,000 meter course, led by Emma Mirwaldt, who placed fourth overall with a time of 19:02.80.

YOUTHFUL
Four of the nine BGSU competitors in the season-opening race for the men's team were true freshmen. On the women's side, three of the six student-athletes who ran were competing for the first time in college as redshirt freshmen. In all, 15 of the 16 student-athletes on the women's roster are freshmen or sophomores.

PRESEASON PREDICTIONS
In the MAC preseason coaches' poll, the BGSU women were picked to finish eighth in the MAC in 2013. The men's team was chosen to finish ninth.

STRONG ACADEMICALLY
Both the BGSU men's and women's cross country teams were named All-Academic Teams by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) for the 2012 season.
